TSA fails most tests in latest undercover operation at US airports

ABC News

In recent undercover tests of multiple airport security checkpoints by the Department of Homeland Security, inspectors said screeners, their equipment or their procedures failed more than half of the time, according to a source familiar with the classified report.

When ABC News asked the source familiar with the report if the failure rate was 80 percent, the response was, “You are in the ballpark.”

In a public hearing following a private, classified briefing to the House Committee on Homeland Security, members of Congress called the failures by the Transportation Security Administration "disturbing."

quote:

Inspectors "identified vulnerabilities with TSA's screener performance, screening equipment, and associated procedures," according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

The statement adds that the findings remain classified but that eight recommendations have been made to TSA to improve checkpoint security. It is not clear what those recommendations are.

The news of the failure comes two years after ABC News reported that secret teams from DHS found that TSA failed 95 percent of the time to stop inspectors from covertly smuggling weapons or explosive materials through screening.

Didn't the last study show like a 90% failure?

They're learning.

ETA just read the last paragraph.

No shock there. The guy working the X-ray machine at BTR was playing on his phone while bags went through yesterday.

How hard is it to spot a banned item in a x-ray machine?

Most of the time going through security the person working the X-ray machine is chatting with their buddy.

Sure. They went from almost completely ineffective to merely a dismal failure.

I was stopped this morning. Dude patted down one of my boots and swiped for explosive residue. Just one boot. It’s really comical

But they made sure to let me know I was wrong for not taking my iPad out of my bag when I flew back home from Pittsburgh Sunday.

DFW, one of the largest in the country doesn't have a problem with it, but Pittsburgh does.

Let's be honest here: we all overreacted to a once in a million event with security theater. The main reason terrorists have not tried anything is they would have no way of getting into the cockpits now. That was the single most effective change after 9-11. Everything else is just bullshite for show.

Could they sneak a gun in and start killing passengers until the cockpit door was opened?

Not sure what TSA expects from workers who don’t get paid much of anything. The quality of people working these checkpoints isn’t much higher than fast food places.
