You have it backwards.
By relaxing certain one-sided regulations across the board, you also allow U.S. carmakers to build vehicles to the same standards.
That means they don't have to buy certain un-needed parts such as chips, relays and electronic controls from Asia.
Ford and Chevrolet can begin building fantastic small trucks like the old Rangers and S-10s again.
This is what is needed.

Spoken like the typical low-education LWNJ that is utterly clueless as to how these little trucks would be a boon to small businesses. They are extremely popular for urban delivery and service vehicles for the self-employed and small business owners in SEA because they are inexpensive, cheap to maintain, and cheap to insure. Similar offerings in the US, like the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200, have been or are being discontinued. So what jobs are being taken away? None, you moron.

So are you just pretending you didn’t see the part where Trump said they’d have to be made in the USA?

Sadly, he apparently cannot see that. One of the common side effects of the more advanced stages of TDS is one’s vision becomes highly selective. Basically, their eyes will only allow them to see things that align with their political ideology of “Orange Man Bad”.

We need to make them here. If I recall it right, it is some quirky government regulations that made small trucks disappear from our domestic market.

In trips to Korea, Japan and China, I saw only one American style pickup. That was in Korea. Making small trucks that fit the Asian market could open some doors.

That's a great looking vehicle.
The only thing I didn't like about the original Samurais, they were a bit underpowered. That's an easy fix with deregulation.

Besides safety standards the "chicken tax" are what prevent them from being sold here. Impossible to compete. Has been that way for 40 years and no one is repealing the chicken tax.

Not sure exactly how the safety standards will work as this article does nothing to address what kind of standards they are willing to relax there.

The Hilux can already be sold in the US if Toyota wanted. They have the Tacoma and Tundra. Never say never but there is nothing major with CAFE standards that keeps the Hilux out. Likely know it just won't sell in this market.

The problem isn't just the CAFE standards, it's also insurance lobby safety regulations, along with EPA emission standards.
There's a whole bunch of deregulations that needs to happen.

This is awesome for someone who drives around local roads entirely. Would I drive it from Clear Lake to Downtown Houston? No. Would I let my son drive it, no.

No doubt. Don't see any of that changing any time soon.

Even then the market will dictate what gets sold here and Americans like expensive cars with lots of bells and whistles.

What's the appeal of a Hilux vs a Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado?

You can't buy the Hilux in the US.

Too many people watched Top Gear 30 years ago and think the Hilux is invincible with no downside.

A hilux built in the US (even to the same standards) would be 35-45k

Price and basic utility.
Ford and chevy could build equal vehicles though with regulation changes.

A few people imported them from Japan. I see them for sale on line with the right side steering. Thought of buying one but held up worried about parts and service.
