We never use a 3pl. Those bastards will never quit calling either. I could kill those frickers at ”freightquote”

Just think how many drivers are needed in a day to supply small business in a city.

I'm right there with you. I'm honestly surprised that they've been able to get by with the amount of trucks/drivers they've had over the past decade.

Most of those sign on bonuses are scams - the companies that offer these are notoriously shitty companies that have screwed many people out of thousands of dollars in earnings via the lease purchase garbage. I know for certain US Xpress is one of these mega carriers offering $10k - the payments are staggered out over multiple years with a bunch of strings attached (mileage, activity, mpg, safety, etc). They're throwing an unattainable number out there as the carrot but in reality you will likely only see 20% of whatever bonus they're offering you. Meanwhile they're paying you less than the industry average because of that big number.

Look for a company that has the higher mileage pay - not the gimmick bonus crap. That's my near decade of trucking experience advice.

There is a huge incentive for driverless vehicles. Don’t expect to retire in the field if you enter now.

I don’t see vehicles ever being completely driverless. Especially things like high value and chemicals. There will at least be a human in th vehicle.

From a huge bubble to nothing in 20-40 years seems unlikely. Even if we go driverless, there will still very much likely be jobs in the industry drivers could transfer into. As said already, a high percentage of today’s drivers are older. So a downturn would not really hurt the industry and a huge percentage would simply retire.

I'm going round and round with Saia today. Scheduled a pick up yesterday morning. They called yesterday afternoon saying they wouldn't be able to make it, but that they'd be here first thing in the morning. Just got off the phone with them. They're not going to make it again today. They actually had the nerve to tell me that since they don't charge for pickups they can't guarantee a pickup. Are you in the shipping business?? How tf do you ship if you don't pick up? We'll see if they come tomorrow.

In the near future, driving will be replaced by computers and self driving vehicles. What will all these folks do for a living?

It is a big problem. In most states, driving is the biggest employer. Its not a matter of if, but when.

How much does the average truck driver make nowadays? No way I could be on the road driving a big arse truck everyday. And the quality of life has to be shite.

Such a difference from 5 years ago...

quote:

A group of truck drivers are planning to protest the federal government by backing up the Capital Beltway around Washington, D.C. The group “Truckers for the Constitution” is hoping to call attention to its frustration with regulations from the Obama administration and the overall political climate in the U.S.

The truck drivers are complaining about their wages, gas prices and the Obama administration’s regulations of their industry.

The answer will vary greatly depending on several things, company, lease agreement, driver on someone else's truck vs owner/operator, how much you're willing to be away from home, long haul, specialized equipment, what endorsements you have, etc etc.

I'd say starting around $40k/year on up to over $100k/year.
