Don't know what to tell you man, since I'm no expert either, but here's my experience within the last few months:

Had a 2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4x4 with over 120K miles on it (been paid off since 2015 and zero accident ever, well maintained); dealer offered me 6200 on trade in. Nope.

Even called and flirted with that "Give Me the Vin" bunch of folks. They actually offered me 7500. Nope.

I went to Facebook Marketplace, posted the truck for sale and sold it in less than 29 hours for 9900 cash. Yep.

eta: So what the poster Stickly said on page 2 of this thread:

Sell it yourself. Trade-ins are a huge profit center for dealerships. You will get hosed.

You already messed up.. go to a different dealership and negotiate the price of the purchase vehicle then tell them you are trading in right at the end.

Look up the 4 square buying method.

Dealerships play you with fake numbers. Be ready to play them back.

Nah I'm using the fleet manager at a dealer close and he has actually offered the most for my trade by 2k and right around the lowest I can find in a 500 mile radius. The problem is he doesn't have the truck I want in stock so I was looking at some other dealers in LA, AR, TX, and MS but just dealing by phone.

John clay wolfe will tell you on his radio show that you can probably beat his price on the open market if you want to go through the trouble. He has to turn a profit on what he buys, but he will a) beat car max (or give you $100) and b) close the transaction quickly and come pick your car up.

True but most people over estimate their vehicles worth....as in garbage in, garbage out. People will say their vehicle is in "great" or "very good" condition when in fact it's usually average.

My wife just traded in her F150 for a new vehicle. KBB said between $13k and $15k trade in value. Because the dealer wasted a lot of her time and screwed some stuff up in the sales process, she got $16k for her truck. Probably showed him her jugs or something but I dunno. Worth it.

If you're trading your vehicle in, there are a thousand other dealers you can find a comparable vehicle to purchase that could give you more than what you're being offered. Gotta be willing to put in the time to di#k with all the idiot sales reps though.

If you’re familiar with Reddit, go on there and post on r/askcarsales. Just tell them your current situation and what you’re being offered. They’ll tell you if it’s a low ball or if you’re being unreasonable.

NADA value is what dealers use. Of course their job is to get your trade as cheaply as possible.

Carmax

Under no circumstances should you take what Carmax gives you. They offered me $3,500 below what the dealer offered me

Also have to keep in mind that even on a vehicle in good condition, dealers still have to put about $1,000 into the vehicle before putting it on their used lot. Exception being if they bring it to auction.

You can kind of get an idea of what your trade should be by finding an identically equipped vehicle for sale on autotrader. Just have to conservatively estimate dealer markup and back that out along with dealer fees/reconditioning.
