The Federalist Article

quote:

But for many in my generation who are also approaching 30, children (and the ideal prerequisite for children, marriage), are still out of the question because they’re too expensive, too time-consuming, and might cramp their style. Those nurturing instincts don’t go anywhere, though. A disturbing number of young adults are directing them toward substitutes—not boots or stuffed toys, but dogs and cats.

quote:

Christian musician Nicole Nordeman recently posted an account on Facebook of a couple she overheard at the airport holding a FaceTime call with their “baby” and his “grandparents.” “They are cooing and gushing and exclaiming ‘well look at YOU, big boy! So big! So handsome! Are you being so good for Nana???’” These “parents” pester their own parents with questions about baby’s feeding, pooping, and playtime, and “nearly collapse with joy” when “baby” comes back on screen for a last goodbye. “Mommy and Daddy love you,” the couple squeal. “You are the best boy! We’re coming home so soon!” Nordeman says she turned around to sneak a look at this sweet baby who’s so beloved by his parents, only to find…a yellow Labrador retriever.

I'd be in what you call the "millennial" category. I see tons of young professional peers of mine (23 to 30) adopting this weird anti-children mentality. At its best, the dog mom/dad might be temporarily postponing children while focusing on their careers. But at it's worst, I've seen those who shudder at the sound of a child and who've sworn against it for life. I've always thought it to be a really disturbing trend personally. This article resonated hard.

I have numerous friends who got a dog as a “practice” to see if they could handle a baby.

Which is fricking ridiculous

Worry about your own business, let others live their lives. Don't let people who choose not to breed rustle your jimmies.

One of my wife (no pics)'s friends threw a 1st birthday party for her dog with a pretty legit custom cake (one each for people and pets). There were invitations, favors, decorations, etc.

I kinda just shook my head.

Well, if you can't handle a dog, you sure as frick can't handle a baby.

If you can handle a dog... that doesn't mean anything.

I have a dog and horse child. I see nothing wrong with it. But I’m alone and don’t really feel the need to be a single mom...

Why do you care if people have kids. The way you morons bash millennials (which most of you are by the way), you'd think y'all wouldn't want them to have kids.

Maybe it's a good thing those people don't reproduce.

A dog is an animal, a baby is an actual human. Two totally different things

I’d disagree. I think the more intelligent people are choosing not to have babies. That’s all fine and dandy for them, but it spells disaster for a society.

I rather a couple get an animal rather than have a baby if they don't have the resources to care for it.

If you're poor, don't have children. You're only making life harder for yourself and the unfortunate child.

ive said it before and I'll say it again: when they research the fall of western civilization years from now, they will find this point in time where smart people decided to not procreate while dumb people fricked like rabbits and say "why in the hell did they do this?"
