Magnolia area that backs up to Spring Creek

It’s hit the 500 year flood plain twice in the last 5 years. Will only get worse as they build more neighborhoods.

Update From Space City Weather

We've seen enough data to raise our flood scale warning to Stage 3. There's still plenty of uncertainty, but odds are increasing that we'll see some significant flooding in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday.
@mattlanza will have a full update in about an hour.

If you live in the Houston area and you want no hype weather updates then follow Eric Berger
@SpaceCityWX and Matt Lanza @mattlanza a couple of pro mets in Houston.

This seems to be a “growing” problem.

Did Ascension Parish ever go through with the moratorium on new construction?

I don't think anyone is really worried about the wind potential.

extreme rain event has been the concern since last week.

Serious question

WHY is this becoming more & more common the past few years?

Because we continue to build in areas prone to heavy rainfall.

I get that part but the 30+ " rainfall totals aren't normal.

But they seem to be becoming more commonplace

People have been here for 300 years. It’s not like no ones ever been here.

Is it global change? Cyclical meteorological changes?

Weve only kept good widespread records on rainfall amounts for the last 30-40 years

Before that we had scattered gauges at airports and NWS stations

Now there are gauges everywhere.

Who knows what big totals were missed due to lack of gauge coverage

People built on high ground back then

Now we build on whatever is available

Note with all this recent flooding the old original parts of cities on high ground dont flood

The natural landscape is altered with the construction, thus causing rain to pool in places that it naturally wouldn't.
