Fair point. But they weren't viewed as people. They were chattel. But yes, that's a good zinger.

Exactly. Slightly problematic state of affairs

We had that same kind of stupid book, from around the same time, for 'Louisiana History' at Silliman in the mid-80s.

This should be required reading for every citizen:

That's why I'm always very careful not to extol the North as wearing the unblemished white hat, even while decrying the South's cause.

You know the South left the union because the wanted above all else the right to keep slaves.

So you believe that a Government that held the belief that no State had the right to secede from the Union, saw fit to retain all these Ordinance and Declaration of Secession as justification for the United States declaring war?

i know you do. that's why i called you levelheaded.

my point is one can make the point "the north was trying to eff up the south, they didn't give a shite about slaves." and the response is "but, slavery!!!" it's an emotional response to a point that wasn't made.

Like BugAC, i don't like conversations about CW because there's too many false equivalencies based on emotion. it's an emotional issue for sure, but i'm not going to double down like he is.

Well sure. And I don't think anyone is arguing for the virtues of slavery. Or the fact that that state of affairs existed from the dawn of civilization. Simply pointing out that those with power typically don't want to lose it and threatening a society's means of economic sustainability, righteous or otherwise, is a sure fire way to elicit a dramatic response, including violence.

I meant in terms of obtaining your vision of who you want to be as a man. If that's your only criteria then your bar is pretty god damned low champ.

Lol if you think concern for the plight of southern blacks was prolific among northern leadership.

And I disagree that a war shouldn't be analyzed from both the thoughts and views of the leadership as well as the average soldier.

You're pretty goddamn stupid if you couldn't follow the simple train of thought between our posts, man.

where is the history about 30,000 free slaves fighting for the south?

The ones that were coerced into fighting unless they'd be put to death or re-enslaved?

So when faced with the horrible decision to either possibly die fighting for a cause they didn't believe in, or possibly die taking a stand against tyranny, they chose to buckle morally?

The real slavery was how the south paid 90% of the taxes for the whole country leading up to the civil war

forced into service? nice try

LINK

They had wealthy black slave owners who did own slaves and did buy family owners but I find it weird that a toatally racist south allowed black men to be wealthy and own land right?

YEA at that time they were an investment...they worked, helped raise children etc. You have to stop looking at the situation from your Yankee brainwashed 2017 lens.

I’m working on finding it, but a couple of years ago I read a beautiful written letter by a Confederate Black Regiment to the Governor of Louisiana declaring why the would willfully and honorably fight for the south.

But you’d rather keep drinking the Kool-Aid so go ahead

lies? I straight up asked my liberal professor if this was true and he said it to be so, only the rich could afford slaves (was also in my liberal book).

You are hearing the narrative from the winning side, all i’m saying is that it was not just a holy war like the North makes it out to be.

A letter sent by a free Charleston mulatto who moved to New York to his brothers in Charleston in 1857 provides some insight in the thinking of blacks about life as free blacks in the North. He wrote that he did not think he could ever obtain "political equality" in New York, and that the general conclusion there of his people was that "this is not our abiding home".
