You need to have him name you as the certificate holder on the workmans comp and general liability Certificate of Insurance. It's easy for him to call his agent and tell them to send it to you. Shouldn't take more than a day if he is legit. A typical contractor will have at minimum $1 million dollars in coverage. The general liability will cover you if the tree hits the house, car, etc and the workmans comp will cover if any workers get hurt.

Anyone doing work on my house and leaves the ground needs to have this. The risk is just not worth it. Insurance is expensive as hell, cheapest guy isn't always the best.

I'd go for it out of principle. Tree men are completely unreasonable with their pricing.

Lets see, some neck down work from a person with no college whatsoever, that will be 3500 for a days work, lol. screw em. go get a degree if you want to make that kind of money, idiots.

You people are scared of everything. And there are fees to get listed on the certificates that most contractors don’t want to eat and will up-charge you on those if they even feel like dealing with Karen type homeowners.

Just grab a ladder, stand it up in the bed of your truck and use a pole saw to get 90% of it down.

I’d want to see what equipment he is gunna use and how he is gunna do it.

If he has a boom truck or is gunna climb it limb it and take it from top down yeah I’d do it.if he has a truck cable and chainsaw then no.

I’ve got ~ 6K invested in just personal gear. The amount of money tied up in big equipment is insane and makes my little locker laughable.

Four saws, multiple rope bags, harness bag, on and on and on.

That’s what you need though, and that locker shows experience imo.

I second this. Got 3 quotes from 3 licensed/insured/reputable companies in Baton Rouge. $3500, $1600, and $800 - for removal of the same exact tree. I chose the $800 quote, it took them a few weeks to get to me, but did the job well.

It absolutely will, you can find a blank certificate of liability online and fill it in.

Lots of tree arborists are college educated, at least the founder/owner.

You are aware tree work is one of the most dangerous occupations to life and property? Have you ever seen an arborist drop a 5 log high 40" loblolly pine through a gap 8 ft wide? Ever seen one climb and top a tree out with controlled falls? Ever watched a 110 year old dead pine shatter like glass right next to a man 100 ft. up in a bucket? Do you understand how much liability insurance costs for that kind of work? For the workers themselves? What about the bucket trucks, track loaders, excavators, tractors, power equipment, fuel, climbing rigging and the fees paid to the landfill to haul your shite off with a chassis cab and 30 ft. gooseneck dump trailer? You think 15 tons of tree debris costs pennies to dump?

What about insurance and maintenance on all of that equipment? Do you know what just one climbing rope costs? You think arborist can't be educated professionals? You are aware that you won't be doing that type work for very long if you're stupid? Whether it be death, injury or financial ruin, an idiot won't be a tree surgeon for long. You think all of that, and all of that experience, training, and nerves of steel should be done at a bargain price because of "muh, degree"?

OP'er, don't listen to this idiotic take from this soft-handed cubicle dweller. As mentioned, we've subbed out machinery when professional arborists needed the helping hand of hydraulics, and there's time where I can't watch - especially when the margin for error is zero. A lot of those guys are some of the brightest, most unique individuals I've ever done business with - you almost have to be built different.

The stupidity and blind ignorance of humans masquerading as arrogance never ceases to amaze me.

Verify it

that doesn't verify anything. this in no way means that the policy hasn't been since cancelled for non payment. Most of these policies are financed and could be cancelled at any time during year for non pay.

500i is fuel injected and only been on the market for about a year.

Each saw is worth $1600, even heavily used.

So OPs quote for three trees would barely cover the cost of one of these saws.

You tell me if the quote adds up.

I didn’t think a quote should cover the cull cost of all your equipment to be paid off in one job.

It should not.

But my point is that three trees for $1700 ain’t paying the bills for legitimate saws, gear, fuel, maintenance, et alia.
