If he just wanted to run away to not have to be in the military or the US again. Why not just stay in South Korea? Could have gone into the countryside somewhere.

Wonder if he's aware that the North Korean leaders routinely put their own family members at the business end of anti aircraft guns at any slight sign of disrespect. I don't think an outsider who illegally crossed over is going to fare any better unless he's used as a prop like Snowden.

I think some of you are (understandably) underestimating the level of left wing propaganda that our junior troops are getting indoctrinated with in the military in 2023.
They are absolutely being inundated by this stuff by other uniformed personnel (generally the "equal opportunity" reps at various units).
I could absolutely see a situation where a junior soldier like this guy, who probably isnt the brightest crayola in the box to begin with, jumps the border for NK seeking out a better life int he Worker's Paradise or whatever.

people believe what they want to believe. and when the choice is "is everyone racist or do i just suck", most of them are going to choose "everyone is racist"
