As others have noted it's more expensive than a plane and of course takes longer. The food is basically snack food. If you just want to enjoy the scenery I suggest flying part way and taking the train from there b/c scenery gets old after a bit.

Took one Baltimore to Philly. Took about an hour for $30. Wifi worked.

Rode it a few times as a young kid, maybe 3-4 times. Last time was when i was a kid from Nola to Washington Dc iirc, was like 9-10 years old. One of the battery banks caught fire and we had to stop at a station in some podunk town in the middle of no where, their fire dept stormed the train and the overhead speaker kept telling us to stay on the train, do not leave and stay calm. Havent rode it since

I guess it depends on how far you are going. I had to take a train to D.C. after 9/11, and it was horrible until I discovered the liquor car.

Taking one from Pittsburgh to NYC around Christmas. Hopefully it doesn't suck.
I hear it picks up speed with a diesel engine east of Harrisburg, then switches to an electric engine for the high speed route btw Philly and NYC.

I took the train from Birmingham to Seattle via DC and Chicago. It took around three days. I had a blast. Bring your own booze and get a sleeper if you plan on a long ride.

I have taken amtrak several times from Dallas to Chicago, Dallas to Marfa, San Antonio to Dallas, Denver to Glenwood Springs and LA to San Francisco. Without fail, the train is several hours late getting you to your destination......8 hours late arriving in Chicago 1 time. Its usually late arriving at your departure station too which sucks sitting around for hours waiting on it. Being on the train is fine. But my wife refuses to take amtrak anymore. Too much wasted time.

I don't know if you're supposed to have it. They threatened to put us off the train in Montana for doing shots in the club car but that's only because we were getting rowdy. Take a bottle or two and you'll be fine.

I have taken a train ride from NYC to Savannah (18hrs) and from Hammond to Memphis (8 hours)
The Hammond to Memphis ride was relatively rough. Lots of bumping, rocking, and stopping for freight trains that have priority
the NYC to SAV was very easy.
I would recommend sleeper rooms as opposed to to standard coach ride though.
Nola to NYC could be miserable baw especially considering the cost comparison to flying

The Empire Builder - right through the mountains. You can stay at the Issak Walton Inn in Essex Montana, then catch the train (the station is five minutes away) and continue your journey the next day.

I fondly remember the ride from chicago to albuquerque in 2012...don't forget to stretch, talk to other passengers in the observation car and take pictures
