Possession isn’t the right word. As Christians, it’s recognized that those who aren’t “saved” can allow themselves to be influenced, affected, etc. by what we call the Law of Sin and Death. Essentially, sin begets death, i.e wages of sin are death. By trusting in Christ as your savior, the power of sin is broken and no longer reigns supreme in yourself. You no longer are held captive to those addictions or behaviors because your faith is centered in Christ.

A person who is not “saved” will endure the consequences of their sin. Many times this can be sickness, disease, etc. If you’re not trusting in Christ, you’re trusting in Self. That’s essentially allowing the master of this world (Satan and his like) to wreck havoc on your life.

Sometimes it’s just plain sickness we all get. Other times it can be consequences of your sin (ex. Intravenous drug use led to Hep C, etc.).

Even other times, some can be tormented by demonic influence that aren’t “saved” but this is a limited subset.

That’s not to say Christians don’t get sick because they do but you’re no longer sin to bring about death in your life. As long as we’re on this earth we will deal with maladies because of the Fall of Man- but never to the extend others do who are lost in sin and despair.

A mind without freedom with Christ is a dangerous thing and combined with the law of sin/death can reap deadly rewards.

That’s why the scripture Romans 8:2 is so important “ For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.“

That’s essentially the Message of the Cross in a nutshell. Trust/belief in Christ as your savior no longer binds you to the consequences of your sin. You are free through him.
