Get one that doesn't shed. Anything your wife would pick out should do it.

Correct.

Dog has to have several surgeries is due to my bad training.

Dogs age. Feels like your parents failed you as a child.

I've had dogs my entire life. I've also visited every state in this country and dozens of countries around the world.

What are you doing with your lives that a dog prevents you from traveling?

All my pets had issues, especially as they got old, but I regret NONE of them. They were members of my family. Would take any of them back again.

I'm not a dog person and actually feel a little bit sorry for people that are.

I also hate that dogs are now being accepted outside the house. I hate going to places that allow dogs.

Sounds like you didn't train your dog. My wife and I have a 100lb German Shepherd that hasn't chewed up so much as a shoe. Though if you're a squirrel hanging out in the backyard you better watch out.

Yeah. My wife and i have a GS and we didn’t do a great job training it but some of it is inherent in the breed. Territorial and all.

It does require a lot of responsibility and precludes you from things like just taking off whenever you want to , but that dog actually changed me. Her love and loyalty made me a little better than i was before.

Dog trashed the house with shedding, accidents, etc.. and killed anything that was smaller than it birds, squirrels, possums, etc.. I was always worried when guest came over on how my dog would interact with these new people or if my dog came across a tiny dog during a walk b/c killing and biting are natural instincts for these animals.

You just described a two year old kid who just ate candy.

In the beginning I was like, frick I can’t do anything and this little shite still sneaks a pee and chews everything. There were some definite nights of regret. Forgot to add, basically bringing every stick and leaf into the house to shred to a million pieces, I had never swept so much in my life.

But after she calmed down and I didn’t have to constantly watch her, couldn’t be a better buddy.

It costs money to board them and you can’t board them without all their up to date shots, which costs money.

It wasn’t a big deal to me, but those first several months you can’t go anywhere unless you are leaving them with a friend or family member.

After our current dog, we're not planning on gettimg another one anytime soon.

Our beagle is useless and doesn't even like being petted. Only comes around when he wants a treat or has to go outside.

No personality. If we ever get another dog we'll go with a lab or something. Had a few labs in my life. Great dogs.

if the boarding of the dog is putting your vacation budget in the red, you probably dont need to be taking a vacation.

I agree pet boarding is expensive, but so is every other aspect of traveling.

We trained ours that the door is a demarcation line. Outside balls, sticks, etc. stay outside and inside balls/toys stay inside. He'll come running across the deck, drop his outside ball, run through the door and pick up his inside ball.

It costs more to travel and board. Sorry we aren’t all Ohio rich.

But you are right, pets aren’t dropped off or left on the side of the road, none are ever brought to the pound. There is definite regret and also probably financial regret. Food for the dog ain’t cheap.

If you can't afford to board your dogs, or even better, hire a sitter so they can stay in their own environment you probably can't really afford to travel either.

Only once - my wife decided she wanted a Blue Lacy dog as it reminded her of a previous dog she had. This dog was beautiful - looked just like the picture below. FYI - Blue Lacy breed is the official state dog of Texas. Unfortunately, we did not do our due diligence as this breed is meant for HERDING (never to be domesticated). The dog did not like other dogs. I swear this dog would circle around me and be aggressive towards me /herd me/ every time my wife was in the kitchen cooking - I guess this breed is overly protective of food. Also this dog would almost break the window by the front door every time we would leave. Every day I would walk/run her but again she did not have a job to perform so she was unhappy.

Once we had kids the dog literally went to the farm. She was much happier but still aggressive when people would leave by attacking the car tires.

A pet is not a human. Only weirdos compare the two.

Unless you don’t own shoes, or unless you locked up your dog 24/7, there is no way a puppy didn’t chew anything

That’s like saying , “my kid never once had a potty accident”
