2 people in the locomotive are engineer and conductor.. Engineers run the train... Conductors do stuff on the ground... Conductor would have been the one to walk back and inspect things and report to the dispatcher..

I seem to remember learning that you are supposed to stop at RR crossing and look both ways. That should be a no brainer.

Do you see crossing arms at ever crossing? I would say the majority of crossing do not have crossing arms, they are usually only placed in high traffic areas.

I don't stop if I can see a good distance in either direction and don't see a big arse train heading my way

I stop at all RR crossings regardless of arms or not. I don't understand how people get hit by trains, it's not like the train swerves at the last minute to hit a car.

If you follow these simple rules then getting killed by a train is impossible

Do you really NEED these..? Just fricking pay attention, don't stop on tracks, and don't try and beat out the train. Pretty hard to miss a train. Especially when they're sitting there blaring their horn

There are some tracks down the street from my work that don't have the caution arms. Its in a little residential area. I would have agreed with you a few weeks ago, but I'll be damned if train didn't come roaring down the tracks and scare the shite out of me the other day.

It wasn't that close, but I then saw how easy it would be for this to happen if someone was just kind of cruising down the street like they do everyday. We are conditioned to stop when the caution arms go down.

These tracks are kind of in the middle of an opening, mind you. Why not just put some fut caution arms up there?

Cost.. Think the city or Parish has to foot the bill to install them and the the railroad maintains them afterwards if I'm not mistaken, which I could be...

Everyone gets complacent doing the same thing every day. Not seeing a train and just going without even stopping to look.. Becomes routine and then one day there is a train and.. Well...

Sad story and just raises attention for dangers present when driving. People killed by trains is probably < 1% of fatalities but makes for good click bait so news organizations will publish more.

I'm all for the trains hauling arse. Get them out of the way.

Don't think i'd feel like I had killed these people if I'm the engineer(s). Trains seem to do a good job of letting you know they are there. If you get hit by a train its either not your day or you did something stupid. No point in blaming the train crew.

Exactly, its not like a train comes out of nowhere. It travels on a track and goes in one direction. And engineers lay on the horn when they are going through towns/small communities. The only way for someone to get hit by a train is for them to try and beat it. There is a certain distance I stop just because you never know what can happen. You could be crossing the track and something comes out of nowhere and out of instinct you hit the brakes.. Its unlikely but from a safety standpoint its better to be safe than sorry.. Unless the train stops, you have a wait time of what? 5 mins? Its just not worth it.

I think it's $400,000 for a full set up. Most small communities not named Welsh do not have that kind of money lying around

Think about it. How do you get hit by a train? It's not like it's some speed train going 100mph in China. I'm sure the horn was blaring its arse off. They had to have had the radio turned up too fun loud or wearing earphones. Just doesn't make sense.
