A friend of mine got married on Delevan Lake which is about 10 miles from Geneva. There were some extremely nice properties on Delevan which included 3 homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

Wake boats are like submarines in rough water. Low bow, heavy, no flare to push water outward away from entering the cockpit. They’re not self bailing, In general though this is just not a boat you want to be in when it’s rough.
I think the most likely scenario that resulted in the kids being trapped is this: downdraft hits and it gets rough fast. Temp drops 30 degrees and heavy rain starts falling. Operator is just making way, everyone is miserable, and pointing the low bow of this boat into the sea and taking it head on only works if he speeds up and gets the bow up. Problem is he also can’t see shite in the conditions and this will only make that worse. Now he’s setup perfectly to stuff the bow on a non self-bailing boat that will have serious stability issues with a cockpit full of water and 10 occupants.
Second issue: This boat has a tower that telescopes up and down, that wind driven rain hurts in a boat and you’re getting soaked and cold, they likely had the tower lowered with the Bimini open which would be just a little higher than the windshield. The salesman probably told them how awesome this feature is and can shelter you in bad weather. The Bimini/tower/speakers board racks and crap created a confined space that trapped the younger occupants as the boat rolled over.
Back in my younger years running boats offshore We used to put all of our foul weather gear on and then hold lifejackets in front of our face when running in storms because the rain hurts so bad when it hits your face at 30mph boat speed and wind speeds anywhere from 10-50+, we didn’t have a windshield that you could get behind and see where you were going. So we improvised, It was painful and also difficult to see, we didn’t want to slow down because we were miserable and getting our asses kicked and going slow wasn’t safer. Typically took an hour run to get back to the dock.
There are Lots of idiots out in the gulf/oceans too but most ocean boaters at least try to get some level of weather/seamanship knowledge. I find that most lake boaters are completely clueless. Articles claiming the driver was experienced don’t mean much, this is as 100% operator error.
For the record I got my master ticket at 21 and was racking up thousands of hours of wheel time yearly running boats plus we did most of our maintenance in house. I knew the boats I ran inside and out. I have driven through dozens of storms like the one described in this event, waterspouts, microbursts, feeling the nearby lightning through the steering wheel, all in the ocean in an open boat. By the time I got my ticket I had 6 years as a mate, operating in these conditions.
I routinely meet guys who operate a boat a dozen weekends per year and rate themselves as expert boat operators. Many are bass boat guys who drive their boat with a trolling motor 90% of the time. Putting 40 hours on a bass/wake/jon boat each year doesn’t mean you know anything about operating a boat. I saw another Nautique owner posting on FB saying “I thought the foam in these boats would keep them from sinking”. Had a Mastercraft owner whose boat was overheating last week answer a question about the sea cock and strainer with “what are those?” Dude is putting his kids in a boat and doesn’t know it has valves you can shut if the cooling or ballast systems start leaking and the boat is sinking.

Delavan is amazing as well. And the mother of an old friend of mine owned one of those homes you reference...we spent a few nights there once.
She was a lesbian in her life after being married and having kids and she bought the house and gutted it, largely because she heard FLW was a mysoginist. I think she used to be the Lane Bryant CEO.
ETA: Just checked Zillow and there's only 4 waterfront places on the whole lake for sale. Cheapest is a 2/2 1,400 sq ft condo with a slip for $1.22MM, most expensive is a 5/5 5,180 sq ft mansion for $11MM.

My wife and I were actually up there at the time this took place. We were going to take a tour on that very boat you see in the video in the link, but we could see it was very dark to the west of the Rivera (the brick building), so we opted to take a tour a couple of hours later. We decided to walk about 4 blocks north to a brewery that is in an old church, where we stop off when we go up there in the winter for the annual ice sculpture weekend. We got about 2 blocks and I could see down the block a sheet of rain coming. I said I don't think we are going to make the church. About 30 seconds later, it just dumped and the wind picked up. Luckily, we were under an awning in front of a tap room. We went inside with a few others. The west facing wall had those large garage style doors that were all glass. I have not seen wind gust like that since a hurricane. Then a red light started blinking, that was the tornado siren. Water was being blown in under the door. It was crazy. After it finally subsided, I joked with my wife we should go check on the car. We walked outside and it was like all hell broke loose. Branches, limbs, broken trees, etc...Sirens all over the place. .
We then heard about the accident on the lake. There were a few news helicopters flying over. It is a very sad story. NWS said there were 90-100 mph downburst.
We did end up taking a tour a couple of hours later. The wealth on that lake is unreal. Wrigley family seems to have the most property. One home is 27k sf with a 27 car garage and a stainless steel swimming pool on the roof of the garage.
The main road to get out was closed due to leaning power lines.
We then heard about the accident on the lake. There were a few news helicopters flying over. It is a very sad story. NWS said there were 90-100 mph downburst.

There is video of the boat being lifted by a crane, the tower is in the down position with the Bimini open. This puts the Bimini top down just above the windshield of the boat, fill it with water and flip or over while everything on board the boat is ejected into the water and it’s very easy to see how these younger kids get trapped.
Also you’re going to consider the observer seat directly across from the helm on the port side to the be the most protected place from the weather and put the kids there. When the boat rolls and they don’t go overboard immediately now they’re trapped with the boat on top of them wearing floatation kids that are aren’t going to be physically capable of escaping.

fricking awful for those 3 kids and their parents . but holy shite the mailboat's captain did a great job keeping calm. Not sure if they just hug the shore on their typical cruise, but that could have been a disaster with a boat like that going down.

Many times I've seen grown men panic during water survival training and needed to be escorted out of flight simulators by rescue divers. There is a reason that each one of these HUET classes have a rescue diver in the simulator, two rescue divers outside of the simulator as well as a medic/diver on the deck.

And part of the reason she gutted it was specifically to destroy something he created. She did put in a really nice pool behind the house which was super fun.
