before I trade it in to get more cash for the car?
My friends insurance will cover the costs since it was his fault backing into it.

If the cost isn't coming out of your pocket, yeah sure.

What kind of car/age?
I wouldn't be surprised if you make a deal with your friend to give you some cash to make up the trade in value. He will tahnk you with his lower auto rates

If his insurance is paying, then why would you not?

I have the same question about the back up camera on my f150. I'm wanting to trade it in and the camera went out.

Is this a real question? Do you enjoy pissing away money unnecessarily?

i dont think the SO is going to get a whole bunch for the car anyways which is why I was asking

I think what he is asking is if he should take the insurance money and not fix it and sell the car OR fix it with the insurance money and then sell the car.

See what the trade in would be and then ask what it would be if you fixed the bumper
?
I traded in my wife's old car after it was rear ended. I got $700 from the guy who hit me, and just pocketed it. The trade I got before fixing it was good enough for me. Used the $700 towards the new car. It all balances out really. I doubt a dealership is going to give you more than what you are getting to have it fixed since they likely have a body shop or work with one closely.

Once they see the car and quote you, you'll not get much of an increase no matter what.

How bad is the damage? If it's just some small scratches, it's not worth fixing.

The whole point is, he's going to have to get a quote for fixing the damage to get money from the insurance. Let's say it's $1000. Insurance can cut that check directly to him. He can use it to fix the car, but It's probably not going to add $1000 of value to the vehicle. The dealership will be able to fix it for less than $1000 most likely and have no incentive to make sure he gets his money back from the fix. Just as soon pocket it and use it towards the new vehicle.
I've traded in a car with bumper damage and a truck with a broken AC. On both occasions, they didn't even ask about those problems. They could fix that AC for $150 in parts ($1200 fix for me) and I'm sure a new plastic bumper would be pretty cheap for them as well (likely could fix it without a new one). You will probably not get your investment in the repair back.

You will end up paying for it one way or the other, be it through insurance or on trade-in.
