re: Tourists disrespecting WWII Memorial in DC - You Decide

You know, if a veteran of any conflict (or any veteran in general) told me they would be feel disrespected if I waded in the reflection pool of a war memorial, I would stay out of it. It's a shame that people can't think about ideas that are bigger than themselves.

I think this come from the modern day concept that too many people have where they think "this is my world and everyone else just lives in it".

I loathe that attitude.

Arlington carries a weight to it. You can feel the souls of the men who are entombed there. I despise the fact that when they change the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier they actually have to make a speech explaining to people why they should be quiet.

That is because of people like you. Who have no respect for anything beyond their own small, tiny, insignificant box.

I could literally spend days on end in Arlington without ever hearing a word and be content. Surrounded by the graves of men who gave their last measure of devotion.

All so people can disrespect them. I don't deny people have that option, and people should always have that option. I just find it disgusting that you, and they, feel that way.

Some of us go to places like this to pay respects to men and women who devoted themselves to something greater than the individual... others go to play in the water like immature children.

Yep.

There's also the "I'm special and unique because mommy told me so and you can't tell me what to do" attitude. Some people just never grow out of being a snotty, self-centered teenager.

Pretty sure his generation fought/died for the very fact they wanted future generations to live joyful lives brought on by the freedom they helped preserve.

He took a machine gun bullet to the knee at Anzio. Lived the rest of his life serving others and died before the WWII memorial was finished. It is one of my greatest regrets that "Pop Pop" didn't see the memorial. If a couple people jump in the fountain, I'm not gonna get pissed.

if this were Arlington, the Alamo, or even the USS Arizona I would have a different viewpoint. But no service member died or is laid to rest at the WWII Memorial.

First, I want to say I respect and honor your grandfather's service and sacrifice for his country. Second, as to the point you make about nobody being buried at the WWII memorial. I don't think the lack of it being a war cemetery lessens the sacred nature of the memorial. I say this because the whole purpose of the memorial is to honor the sacrifices made during WWII, including those who died and those, like your grandfather who were wounded.


Here's some of the inscriptions around the memorial. You tell me if this is not a sacred place where the utmost respect is called for.






(FYI: Each star represents 100 Americans who died in WWII, there's a total of 4000 stars on the wall.)
