Why do these systems keep hitting same areas over and over?
Posted on 4/1/17 at 10:33 am to GEAUXmedic
The 12z 3k NAM seems to be favoring discrete/clusters over a single big MCS for storm mode tomorrow. That would be concerning given the STP map GeauxM posted above. STP is just one guidance tool and there are plenty of examples of high STP environments not producing tornadoes. One thing to note, soundings show a smooth veering of winds with height tomorrow and that could be very problematic. We have seen a lot of setups lately with parameter spaces that seemed to favor strong tornadoes but the winds didn't veer smoothly with height.

I wouldn't be surprised if we end up getting a PDS out of this.
Tornado threat and possibly 5+ inches of rain. I can't wait.

Although I do not like the SPC's terminology of "slight", "moderate", etc. they seem to be getting the zones picked out in advance fairly good this year.

Almost 9,000,000 people in the moderate area.
It was 7,000,000 this morning.
14,000,000 in moderate/enhanced.

Pretty serious wording in this new update

Yep. They are inching towards a PDS.

Of note: there may also be a significant severe weather event for parts of the SE around the Wednesday-Thursday period from the next system. This would be more for AL, MS, and GA. But we kind of have to get passed this first system before we can really understand the next one.
Just something to keep in mind for people in those areas.
