Can anyone provide insight on pre surgery strengthening of knee walking on leg after injury. Also post surgery recovery. I tore mine 10 days ago went to Orthopedic today surgery 1st week in Dec. I haven't walked on the leg since injury per ER instructions. Now Dr. says you are free to bend knee walk on it etc.. but I'm terrified to walk on it. And bending it hurts and scary.

I did some pre surgery rehab. Not sure how much it helped. Had surgery right at 4 weeks after the tear. You can walk on it all you want. Don't lock that knee up to support your weight or you will damage the other ligaments and knee worse.

My sister tore hers skiing and didn’t get an MRI until a week after.

She told me it hurt like a mofo, but she went to work and everything between that time.

Just don’t put it under any extreme circumstances. Walking should be fine aside from swelling, etc...

You can do whatever you feel comfortable doing within reason

Its torn, you cant make it worse.

Dont run or do anything with quick pivoting

Good luck. You will never be the same. Use crutches until you can walk on it. Atrophy will delay your recovery and sets in with immobility. Try to exercise the best you can until post-surgery recommendations.

Do you play for LSU? Why is this on tRant? The opioids?

And I will stress immediate flexing and bending as soon as possible after surgery. Take rehab hard and serious for the first 2 months and you will be just fine. I did 3 hard months and have been fine since.

One more thing I wish I had known: have a game plan for pain management post surgery. They prescribed me hydrocodene and OxyContin. I think the hydrocodene should be good but it's almost not necessary. If you can avoid it and just take ibuprofen do that. It took me 2 entire days of no hydrocodene to withdrawal from it after only being on it for about 10 days. Now I had a cadaver ligament so that may change if you have patella tendon or hamstring.

Just walk on I?t and treat I?t as normal, as far as walking. Obviously any pivoting or change of direction will cause some pain.

I initially injured mine in June. Had a cloudy MRI, but never confirmed a tear. Had a newborn two weeks later, so didn’t push surgery or repair right away. Was basically back to normal a few months later, although I’d have some pain after athletics, and couldn’t do any harsh change of direction. Reinjured I?t again in December, went to a new doctor and confirmed a tear/obliteration of the ACL. Didn’t have surgery until April. Again, up until that point I was mostly fine as far walking/minor activity. I had very little atrophy and was walking within a week of surgery (walked into 2nd follow up).

I had ACL/PCL reconstruction surgery last year.

I suggest doing as much strengthening of your quads as you can tolerate pre surgery. It will help in the recovery process

Fun fact:

(or maybe not so fun) If a torn ACL is not repaired, the tattered pieces simply get absorbed by the body and you'll be left with just 3 ligaments in the knee.

Some studies show the knee is actually stronger. Numerous ACL repairs done in BR alone in the NFL for long and successful careers, doubt the OP will stress the post operative knee to that extent. You're talking out of your arse

Had no idea people could function like normal without a fully functional acl

pre surgery strengthening

Bike and limited bodyweight movements. You're not trying to strengthen the knee as much as You are the quad pre surgery.

You can walk with no crutches and it'll be fine

post surgery recovery

Depends how much pre surgery rehab you did as to how long that will take. If you live an active lifestyle it will take longer to get back to normal.

If by some chance you're an athlete, don't be shocked if you tear your other ACL down the line.

Take off running as fast and hard as you can. It's like that first time off the diving board as a kid. You just need to go for it.
