Also, people still have this insanely naive notion that "if we just do what they say, they will permit us to return to our normal lives".

I would say that this could be equated to the forcing of the Japanese into internment camps during WW2.
I mean, it was just until it was determined that they wouldn't assist the Japanese military.
Seemed the appropriate course of action for those worried about the safety and well-being of Americans at the time.
There is no need to jump to "mass murder". Auschwitz is not the best choice of descriptors, but most people don't recognize the names of the Japanese internment camps.

It is a forced separation of individuals from the rest of society through the guise of "safety", with the stance of the jailers that "if you do what we say, you can rejoin the population".
The individual loses their livelihood and property if they do not comply.
