I did this once, told retention person that I wanted to cancel, they said ok let me proceed with that...i hung up

I called in the fall to do exactly this, told the lady I wanted to cancel for cost. Asked her if there was anything she could do, she said no and put the cancellation through... Got a call the next morning from their retention department asking why i was leaving, etc. Only then did I get hooked up

It's not wrong, and it'll work, but you're not really fooling anyone with your wife excuse. You really think the rep you talk with can't pull up your previous interactions? They're probably rolling their eyes at your lie, but they'll still give you what you want because they're allowed to give it to you, and they're rated on how many people they retain.
