It sounds like Tiger Plaza is the place for you. I don’t think you can afford El Cid. That’s baller territory.

So do I. The dad made about 60k but that was a few years ago so maybe 70k by now. He worked side jobs when he could. Wife worked part time at the church. He drove a company vehicle and the wife drove a 8yo minivan with high mileage and liability insurance only. Kids were all on Medicaid. Not sure about parents health insurance. They never had the nicest clothes or latest gadgets but they didn't look "poor" or needy. They all seemed happy. I envied them sometimes. I tried to convince my ex that we could do this because I made double what he made and she could work part time or not at all but she wasn't having it. She wasn't willing to make the lifestyle adjustments. Now I'm single living in BR and after child support, mortgage, insurance, internet, cell phone, etc. my 130k doesn't go as far as you might think. Some might say I'm OT poor

When we first got married my wife and I lived off of 72k salary, our rent was $1200, we had 1 car note of $375, and saved about 1k per month to pay for grad school. We shopped sales, but it’s not like we were eating Ramen every night. We also drank a lot and were in bars pretty often (happy hours mostly).

If you don’t have student loans or a grad school bill, and you don’t try to live outside of your means you can probably do it on ~50k as a single person.

ETA: this was 11 year ago, but I would assume you can still probably get a decent spot to rent for $1200 in BR, we were in Uptown New Orleans at the time.

Living wage for a single person in EBR, according to MIT methodology, is a salary of about $45k.

They probably take into account things like average apartment rent, but most normal people would not be willing to live in an average BR apartment.

I'm sure NBR apartments are averaged into that calculation. Remember the old St Jean apartments? Those are around 1k for a 1BR now and are still partially Section 8/rent controlled.

Recently, or like 10+ years ago?

Single until 2018 then married with two kids and one on the way. I make significantly more now and times are tighter obviously but I’m just saying it can be done and doesn’t take an extravagant salary in BR.

If you look at rent.com LINK $1,100 can get you a decent non section 8 apartment.

I think $50k ($25/hr) is probably going to be the floor for most medium sized cities in the South. You can make less work but you're going to eat into quality of life and at some point you dip into safety concerns.

For that total figure $38,000 after taxes, so...

- $15,000 rent on a decent, safe place
- $4,000 utilities, internet and cell phone
- $6,000 for used car note, gas, maintenance, tags and insurance
- $5,000 for a marketplace health insurance plan and typical healthcare expenses
- $5,000 groceries, snacks, fast-food, restaurants and bars
- $1,000 for clothes
- $1,000 for sundries and various household items
- $1,000 misc. hobbies and activities

And that's putting zero into savings, investments or debt reduction plus no vacations or fun-filled social events - just work, eat, sleep and do something lame once a week.

Welcome to Biden's America!

I wish the lad well. It cost a great deal of money for a single person to live.

$1100 is a lot on 45k though. That's around $2600/mo take home. You are down to $1500 after rent. You'd probably need roommates to live in a half decent place.

True, but that is less than 1/3 of the salary. That’s why the calculation is called “living wage.” You are scrapping bye with little left over for much else.

Could prob do it for 4-5k a month but why not try to make as much as you can? Live your simple life and save a bunch of money. Retire and get out of BR as quick as possible

10 years ago, as a single guy fresh out of school, I was making $48k.

I didn’t feel like I was killing it, but I wasn’t hurting. It also helps that I just worked, came home, went to sleep. Maybe ate out 2-3x per week. If I had any kind of social life at all, maybe I would have felt differently.

I’d say 1.5-2x that for Joe Biden’s economy in 2024.

What is a livable salary of a single person in BR?

If healthcare is included at work, you could easily get by on $50k as a single person in BR with $1000-1200 a month rent

1 bed apt minimum $1100 currently in BR. Maybe cheaper in DS or Prairieville.

Considering the other things like groceries, eating, insurance etc etc I’d say 45k at the conservative least.

55k+ would be good and 65k+ would he comfortable.
