Question for those you spending big money on private school tuition. Are you saving for college too? As a non OT baller certainly seems daunting to have private school tuition, save for their college, and save for your future (on top of all the other cost of living).

Yes. In our case, I opened 529 accounts for both kids during the week that they were born. Would probably have considered setting up trusts for them if I had to do it again.

It wasn't easy (especially early on) making the monthly contributions, but it became more manageable over the years.

So glad public schools on the Mississippi coast are upper level education compared to the public school issues everyone is facing in Louisiana. Sounds like an absolute mess. There’s literally 2 private high schools (both Catholic) in the lower 6 counties on the coast of that tells you anything.

Not at all, this is year 3 of her education. We had an opportunity to move and after seeing the invoice come across that was the final push we needed to get out.

Yes I am also saving for college. Opened their 529 accounts shortly after they were born.

A large percentage of parents who send their kids to private school don’t have the funds to pay for college 100%. They rely on scholarships. They may be able to pay for a portion of college. This is pretty normal for most private school parents.

My goal is to fund it 100%, but not sure I will get there. I had student loans for a long time and I don’t want my kids to endure that if I can help it.

Some of the high schools on the coast are better than others. We’re zoned for one of the others. Private has been cool though…probably would be better with more competition.

Not old enough. I will probably pay for private school up until high school and let them decide where they want to go.

Only reason is that we pay $140 a week for Daycare and that comes out to a little over $7200 a year. The two private schools in our area are $8100 and $7500 per year.

Not losing much money by sending them to a private school

I live in Louisiana and my kids, well one graduated and the other will graduate next year, and they both go/went to one of best Charter Schools in the entire state....so there's that

Yea we lucked into ours. It's an older school in an expanding area, so it's small and almost like a private school. It's awesome. If you move two neighborhoods over you are zoned differently and have to drive by our elementary school to get to the new one they built. Which is good as well just significantly bigger.

So I'm thankful.

I did, but their grandparents helped out early on with initial investments. Was paying around 16k a year for HS, it was about even money when she got to LSU. Without TOPS, we’d be having a different discussion.

most that can afford to bank roll private school can afford to bank roll college too.

but to answer your question...yea we do. prolly will be able to just give it to them though.

for example....LSU is like 12k in state...thats less than many pay for private school

We did for a while, but we moved to be in a good public school system.

Tuition up here is $26,000 or more per year for high school.
Elementary school was $16,000 per year. (it is $20K now) When we had kid #3, we reevaluated our situation.

It can get tricky, because public schools can change dramatically and quickly. We were thankful to have an option for open enrollment when that happened, and we moved to be in the place we wanted.

Is there a decent private school under $20k in the US?

Yes, in mid to smaller towns. But I just checked some schools back from where I grew up, and tuition at some of those has even crossed $20k for high school.

Decent "country" schools still out there for $5-10k. Tradeoff is you would be living in bumfrick, wherever.

TOPS doesnt pay as much as you think it does

You think TOPS pays for everything? My son gets $4000 a semester from TOPS.....thats chump change compared to everything else

I believe I estimated LSU all in at $20k per year after TOPS (before Greek fees which would be applicable everywhere). We are looking at $29k at Arky w the 90% out of state tuition waiver for GPA. Fayetteville here we come.

That’s an accurate estimate
