We have $900 LG that has constant out of balance issues. I think any of the washers without the center post will have the sameproblems. According to CR's the Speed Queen the most reliable. That what we will buy next time.

I made this purchase 2 years ago and I asked around quite a bit. All advice from anyone I'd give credibility to insisted I should buy something with as few options as possible. Washer/ Dryers are unfortunately no longer "durable goods" and don't last 15 or 20 years like they used to. I was directed to specifically stay away from any machine that appeared to have a computerized interface that drives the options. So far, I have not had any problems with mine, Maytag Centennials, but they are very much bare bone machines with no frills and look awful. Luckily, mine are located in the garage so appearance isn't a consideration for us in any way. I would say your decision would be tough if your machines have to be in a visible place within your home because the more attractive machines will have all the nonsense that makes them inherently more unreliable...

Speed Queen, hands down. Best agitator. Also allows you to open the lid without a crowbar.

We bought an LG washer/dryer set about 4 years ago and they've been perfect

Each was like $500, got a good deal during black Friday from home Depot.

I have a LG with out of balance issues too. I found out if you gently pry up on the plastic cover in the center of the tub that there is a screw that needs tightened down every few months. Also if its gets real bad the main nut on the bottom of the washer needs tightened. Its something like 27mm or 32mm and you have to turn he washer on its side to access it. I've only had to tighten that once.

This might help. When you put whatever you are washing in there, make a nest with the center open to the bottom. The machine is designed to self balance the load and this helps. I do this with my LG and it seems to work. Never had any bad vibrations in the spin mode.

DO NOT buy LG!

Why? I bought one six months ago and all that has broken is the little chime that tells you its finished.
Oh, and it has unbalanced load every time we wash something larger than a pair of jeans.

Fitting post for the last day of Black History Month.

Some folks just won't let the issue of racism go.

It looks like the board's overall consensus is Speed Queen.

I think Napoleon recommends the Speed Queen model with a mechanical timer.

If you want a basic, no-frills top load washing machine get an Estate by Whirlpool.

Basically 30 year old technology that will last a long time.
