So you're saying you turn your ac off at home during August because you don't need it?
Still alive.

While I can't totally disagree, change is not always a bad thing. I'd like to see the summer break extended for many reasons and that doesn't make me a pussy.

I applaud this
Boo recess duty in August

Without AC, those buses can reach 117°.
So. I really don't care. We made it just fine while we were in school.
Get out of the AC and put the video games away. Bunch of pussies.

Kids will spend more time in school and we will end the threads about how teachers don't really work.

went to school in August, in La in a school where half of my classes had no AC. The windows were opened, that's it.

You may turn it up, but not off. If you turned it off all day this time of year, your house would not cool off until it was time to wake up in the morning.

If their lazy asses were mowing the grass and working in the summer, this wouldn't be an issue.

a lot of places run from the week after labor day til mid june.
it makes a lot of sense to do. anyone have a good argument against that, other than "kids are soft today"?

Why do you say that? I use to do the same, when I was single and no one was home during the day. My house cooled pretty quickly. I didn't live in the middle of a subdivision where my house sat in the sun all day and it was not a problem to cool it.

That one hour of recess outdoors is too much for these kids?

I have no problem with that.

This is a joke, though.

I wish schools in the South would take two months off in the Spring or Fall instead of the heat of Summer.

It was the 80's, so, not "gramps" yet. I figure no one said anything back then because they didn't think we were pussies.

If heat is your reasoning, the difference between the heat in August and June is finer than frog hair. It's all hot as hell. I'm not a fan of the year carrying into June.

It gets damned hot here in June also...so moving the school calendar back a few weeks won't help...you are just transferring the hot days to the back end of the year instead of the front end.

Yep. Plenty of ignorance in this thread.

I always thought the south and north had scheduling all wrong. I understand why the north starts after labor day, but they could really afford to start earlier to avoid the snow day issues. My cousins in Connecticut would sometimes be in school to almost July. I think they may have once or twice.
As for the south, starting in early August is just not smart. Might as well push back to September to lower costs and perhaps avoid some of those August hurricanes from time to time. But ya know, habits are hard to break

early mid june heat is not mid august heat. No comparison.

Hey, PE coach, do your job. You already get the whole summer off. We know you want time off for yourself, not the kids.
In all honesty though, school should be a year round ordeal. There should be smaller holidays in each of the four seasons.
