Stop taking in all forms of news media, and don't hang around liberals. The Poli board is basically unreadable. Your life will be better if you remove the loudest fringe.

Out of intellectual and informed people, you'll find that they are mostly towards the center.

This is just revisionist history. Just because you didn't see it as a kid, doesn't mean it wasn't widespread.

The premise of my belief system is that the government can mismanage, under deliver and overcharge for everything they touch. The fewer of them there are, the fewer laws, the better off we are.

For those who believe in more regulation, if you generally ask them if they trust the government, the resounding answer is no. So they want more government, but don’t trust the government to do what is right. That mindset lacks logic.

I've always held the belief that blaming everything on social media and the media is just low hanging fruit.

It's too easy and takes very little thought without looking at the deeper issues.

Things were pretty bad in the mid 1800s. But the modern era of divisive politics can probably be traced to Newt Gingrich. Pretty good podcast on NPR's Fresh Air about it.

social media and the msm may not be the cause of the problem, but they damn sure figured out how to monetize it.

while i some what agree, SM does give a platform for the crazies to be heard. and the MSM highlights those crazies. so I kinda agree with both you and Rodger.

No, it's been particularly divisive since Obama took office, and Trump harnessed it to his advantage in his campaign.

Social media has made things crazy. All the extreme nut jobs have a voice and people give them attention. It fricking sucks because when I was younger I enjoyed politics. The way the media works now because of social media kills it as well.

You also get regular folks that you know are level headed just share the most biased ridiculous shite just because it’s easy. In general everyone is good it just seems bad.

It's hard to stop the ball rolling when your POTUS blames everything on racism and Republicans

Bingo

The nature of media changed dramatically and it's basically all negative and all yellow journalism.

No offense, but this is exactly the type of thing that feeds it. WhiskeyThrottle would have had the same view 40 years ago, and that is fine. However, the only ones who would hear about it would be his family and friends. He goes about his life thinking most everyone is on board with him.

Now he has an opportunity to put his views out there for potentially the whole world to see and consume. He takes that opportunity here even though it is completely unresponsive to the OP.

The OP was asking about the level of political discord in the nation and how did it get that way. WhiskeyThrottle reads that as an invitation to talk about his political philosophy.

The varied ways that we can access information has allowed a larger percentage of the population to be involved.

Obviously cable television allows us access to more info that the big 3 networks that used to spoon feed Americans whatever their perspectives were.

And the internet allows the exchange of ideas that we didn't have even 25 years ago.

More divisive? Hmmm. Just more people involved. Hopefully as we progress, we can learn to develop our thinking in a fashion to realize that there is a lot of gray area and we need not be so polarized. How to achieve that is the challenge that I see.

Will we have another civil war before we achieve that?

Yes. Mother frickers used to duel with pistols on the white house lawn. We fought a civil war at one time. We are tame compared to our early days.
