Toilet paper - you keep it free or on the roller?

Free range toilet paper or do you pull it from the roller on the wall?
I have always been a "free range" toilet paper type person, wife (no pics) has always been "on the roller" type person.
Now we have a hook instead of the old fashion print loaded roller, so the roll is either on the roller or free range, like below

I typically unroll the while thing in a pile on the floor. Then just rip out fistfulls when needed.
