The roller in my apartment is in a weird spot, kind of behind the toilet. It's awkward to reach back to it, so I just set it on the tank.

Free range is so much easier for me. I just don't get the whole purpose of pulling toliet paper out, then folding it. I can unroll and fold at the same damn time free range. I'm a no nonsense guy though. Whatever is most streamlined.

I've seen both, but have some class and put it on the device that was intended to hold it. Toilet paper must roll out towards the front like in the pic by OP. None of that backwards crap, no pun intended.
