And what about context? Without an understanding of the context in which history was made, (and religion probably played the biggest part in the shaping of such) the whole thing lacks a basis.
How do you teach the crusades? The 30 years war? The Holy Roman Empire? The spread of the various caliphates?
Teach the religious context as an integral part of understanding history.

The only consultation to this is the fact that these types of people will never hold any position of importance in society. Facebook is their only pulpit, and their congregation is still being fooled by Onion articles.

Meh, look at this thread. With minimal knowledge of what the curriculum was there are people defending teaching of the Qur'an in schools.
Forget that our nation has been guided by Christian values for the last 250 years. Hell, the declaration uses the word "Creator," Yet mention of the bible in schools would get these same people outraged.

EBR public school education here. I was taught about Christianity with the bible being used as a reference. I was also taught about Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and Paganism. Trying to keep one or the other out because it isn't your belief is ignorant. I don't know this woman, but I have a pretty good idea of who she is. It wasn't good enough for her to do something because she believed in it, she posted it to social media so all of likeminded friends could pat her on the back. This was more about attention for her than it was concern for the curriculum. I wonder if she made any attempts to talk to the teacher and get a better understanding of why this was being taught in class? Doubt it.

Read the directions. It's a critical thinking exercise where they want the students to examine the themes of the passage and compare them to what they've learned thus far. It's not saying "memorize this passage"

even if it was this, the critical aspect is that it's not saying that the tenets of Islam discussed are true or you should believe them
that's where you get into coercion and the issues with separation of church and state
the problem that Christians have when trying to discuss this is that they don't realize how immersed our culture is in Christianity that they've lost all reference points to what coercion is and when you cross that line
this ignorance/bias also leads to stupid arguments, like ones saying that we should be teaching Christianity as much. well that's not really necessary b/c we already know all that shite. why waste the time and be inefficient?

i'm 100% in favor of teaching creationism in school right next to evolution. teachers just need to use peer reviewed scientific literature when doing so
i don't get why people are scared to discuss creationism as a concept that people believe

We teach/are taught about Indulgences even though no one believes in those anymore. It's an important part in understanding why there was a Protestant movement. Not much difference between that and teaching that Muslims believe in Creationism. It's historically relevant.
