A Baton Rouge woman was arrested Wednesday after police said she beat her 9-year-old, knocking the child unconscious and leaving numerous injuries, according to Baton Rouge police.
Jvonta Shavers, 23, is accused of beating her child with a stick repeatedly, causing her to lose consciousness, possibly twice, leaving two black eyes, many bruises and scratches on her arms and back, and swelling on many body parts, including her head, according to Shavers' arrest report.
The child was absent from school for two days following the abuse, but when she returned Wednesday she told a staff member of the incident that happened over the weekend, the report says.
Shavers told police she had been disciplining the child when the girl ran into a door frame, but then the she also admitted to striking the child with a stick, the report says.
Shavers, 311 Flicker St., was booked into Parish Prison Wednesday afternoon on a count of second-degree cruelty to juveniles.
