re: To move or not to move: Would you return to Mandeville from Houston? UPDATED

I did. Same thing, had a career opportunity. Four years ago. Overall, I think we made the right decision, but there are things I miss about Houston.
Being back close to our family in NOLA is a HUGE part of this. Grandparents can come to the kids softball games on a weeknight. Kids can go spend the night at grandparents house.
In Katy we paid $15/hr for a babysitter for our two kids. Dinner and a show at Hobby Center with travel time was a five hour affair. So we are paying $75 just for the babysitter, before we even start on expenses for dinner and show. Now, we can just drop off kids at grandparent house on the way out.
Tuition sucks. If you are living on the northshore, are you comfortable putting your kids in the public schools? St Tammany schools are OK but they are not the same as schools in Katy, Woodlands, etc.
And depending on your job, the money may be the same now, but probably down the road, you would make more money in Houston. A lot of people on this board care about making money first and foremost. If you are like that, I would not move. But if you are only concerned with making a comfortable amount of money, not the most money, and family and whatnot are important, I would consider it.
I love this place, warts and all. We came back and we felt like we could help, that the only way for this place to succeed is for the good people to return home.
i have no problem talking with you off the board if you want.

It is amazing how much further your money gets you in Houston Vs NOLA.
It depends. For Mexican food, yes. For nursery school, NOLA is much more affordable. If you are paying private school tuition in NOLA, it crowds out so much of your other potential spending.

If you actually live in Houston and not one of its sprawling suburbs you are sending your kids to private schools too.

The North Shore is pretty much one big strip mall now so you will think you are still in Houston.

What do you know about League City? I'm trying to help a patnuh relocate down to the Houston area. He is looking at Seabrook, Kemah, League City, Etc. Will be working on the E side of town, just off of I10.

Hell NO! Income tax in Louisiana and it is about to be increased with the democrats in the Governor's Mansion.
You'd be making less money with a lower standard of living.

Hell no...
Move to higher cost of living = lower pay
Higher cost of housing
Worse schools
State income tax
Likely higher crime
I was born and raised in Uptown, but no.

I do miss being just a few hours from the Florida beaches. Galveston isn't even worth driving to.

if you can get your kids into the AP programs Memorial, Stratford, Bellaire, or Lamer you are fine without send them to private school.

These points just amaze me about LA.
I've been moving back and forth between the two areas and I just can't believe how LA will settle for a much lower standard of living. I love the people back home, but it is night and day when you see the investments in infrastructure and education in Houston vs the welfare programs in LA.
I just moved back to Houston in Nov and the kids are back in public school, and their education is so much better. My taxes are also lower and I can afford more property. I actually pains me to see LA going in the opposite direction; it becomes more of a welfare state every year.

I know exactly how you feel, pains me as well.
I'll never be a "Texan" but the advantages/quality of life cannot justify moving back. Hell the public schools here and the burbs are a mostly 9-10 and 10/10 and are better than most top private schools in Louisiana.
I visit often but will never move back.

What is on the East side that would be comparable to Cinco or Katy? When I used to hang in Houston, Kingwood was the place to be (back in the day.)

Nope.
Houston is a better place to live.

I hated Houston with a passion when I was down there for several months this past spring/summer. Austin is probably the only city in Texas I would enjoy living in. But I'm a 32 year old musician, that hates country and pop music. And that's pretty much the Houston music scene.
I've been missing Nola tremendously. It can be a fricked up shite hole, but also am amazing place. As a drummer, it was heaven for me. I got to play in numerous parades, drum with a couple Mardi Gras Indian tribes, and many other events and festivals.
There aren't many places in the world, where I can drunkenly drum while walking down the street, to turn around and see twenty+ people following me and dancing (it happened after Krewe du Veiux while bar hopping). On certain days, walking around with a drum led to some incredible times.
I have a strong feeling I'll end up back over there one day. It's close to my family in Mobile, and I'm a couple thousand miles away from them, which sucks. But I really like Colorado, and will enjoy it for another year or two. My current company is going to pay for me to get some expensive certifications. Once I'm in clear with them financially, I might start looking that way again.

Nothing.
You've got Baytown or Mt. Belvieu. Neither are desirable.
To the south you've got Clear Lake/League City/Webster/Kemah. If he has to live on the eastern edge of Houston, I'd live down that way.

He will be working in Jacinto City, and is worried about the commute. Would obviously rather be somewhere like the Western areas, but doesn't want to spend 2+ hours a day in traffic. I haven't been around in so long, I can't be much help.

Thank you!
You either:
---Hate mock schedules
---Hate women with big butts
---Hate paying 3.78 for gas because you think you're not going to get taxed later
