we're witnessing the depths that humanity can sink

Which would make designing a safe sub much easier than designing a safe rocket ship.
In this case - Gravity is part of your propulsion (as opposed to requiring a rocket engine). IMO - Engineering the "getting you there" is easier for underwater... Creating "an enclosed environment capable of supporting human life" on the other hand. MUCH more difficult for underwater than in space.

I'd love to have some more background information on that.
I believe NASA will act as a subcontractor to private companies if you pay them to do it but I'd love to know what involvement they really had in this.
They probably designed the pressure vessel itself, and the company took the general shape of it to work off of and crumbled up all the important bits and wiped their arse with them.
I dont think carbon fiber is a poor pressure vessel material, it sounds like they just used off-spec stuff.

Normally I would agree. However, this is a commercial passenger vehicle. Redundancy is required across many areas in commercial flight so why not in commercial submersible vehicles?
If deep diving becomes a thing then it's a different story. I don't see any reason to legislate fridge activities. I think more people summit Everest in a couple days than have ever been below 12,000ft.

Harbor Freight carbon fiber?

How was this thing suppose to get back to the surface had nothing gone wrong?
Further, if they find this thing, how do they plan to bring it back to the surface?

If somebody wants to pay somebody else a shitpile of money to do dumb shite they should be able to IMO.
He did make them sign a "you might die" waiver....

NASA helped design this piece of shite death trap so its kind of a stalemate
They didn't do much.

NASA expresses concern for missing Titan submersible, says it consulted but didn’t build craft.
“NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center had a Space Act Agreement with OceanGate and consulted on materials and manufacturing processes for the submersible,” the statement said. “NASA did not conduct testing and manufacturing via its workforce or facilities, which was done elsewhere by OceanGate.”

Based on the notoriety/wealth of those aboard I wonder if conspiracy theories will come out that this was no accident??

this is very close to a "hold my beer," Darwin Award scenario

The sub was at close to atmospheric pressure, so what happened here is the opposite, Rapid compression. Absent of the sub, I guess they would be smashed and compacted into a shoe box sized spherical blob. With the sub though, it would be a very violent implosion. They basically just cease to exist.
I hope they are able equalize, that's a bad headache if not.

Trouble with that is, they would have quickly told him to go frick himself with all the corners he cut and jury rigging he is now know for. There's a reason he hired the type of inexperienced young people he did.
