I feel like for the past 5-7 years, I have missed out on life. I genuinely think it all boils down to my job. I’m tired of the 65-70 hour weeks in the fall. I’m tired of working 2-3 Saturdays a month in the fall. It eases up a bit in the Spring, but before I know it, summer is here and camps for athletics and extracurricular are starting up.

My wife wants to start trying for a little one. We aren’t getting any younger. I can’t fathom having a child and both of us only seeing each other (and a kid) for an hour or two a day while awake.

We are both teachers and both involved in extracurricular stuff and coaching. I’m just done with it. I’m burnt out. I’m spent. Even things like LSU football…I miss out on a chance to go because of a Friday night football game or something like that.

I know people say you may never be ready for a child, but I think for me to make it work, my wife or I need a career change, or a school change at the least.

teaching is great for kids, especially with little ones, because of the summers off. maybe talk to admin and see about getting some responsibilities changed?

I’m sorry you’re struggling.

Kids changed everything for the better for me. I recommend having one soon and experiencing the clarity it brings.

I was genuinely empathetic towards your situation as I read and internalized your description of it. Then you said teacher and I’m now very very confused

So change something. It’s not a difficult answer, you just need to have the balls to break out of what ails you.

Bingo. Most don't and never will. Just spinning on the wheel.

Good that it worked for you but very often it can have the opposite effect. I’ve had people with great jobs and great relationships tell me it’s a massive strain.

It all seems to be coming to a head right now. I’m burnt out. I know I need to change schools and responsibilities. I’m hoping I can do that at the end of this year.

I enjoy summers and holidays off, but my summer is actually about 3 and a half weeks when all is said and done.

The Saturday responsibilities are getting out of control. Making a change is obviously easier said than done. I teach a class that will have 1 teacher for that subject at each middle school. I’m one of 3 at my HS right now. My wife likes what she does and isn’t burnt out…yet.

It kills me to not see her but a few hours a week sometimes. It pains me to think of raising a child with that schedule. I get a kick in the nuts every time I look at a football or baseball schedule and realize we can’t go because of some extra obligation.

I know this is first world problems, but I think I’m broken in that regard.

I could see that happening. I guess my thought is that he chose to coach kids so odds are he’s the type of guy that would really get into raising one.

I’m an 8 hour drive (minimum from BR). By the time I’m done on Friday at about 1AM, I have put in a 18 hour day of work

If you are working more than 40 hours a week you are doing it wrong.

I know the hate teachers get. Teach or coach anything that revolves around UIL events and Friday nights and you are chained to your job more than ever. Minimum 10 football games, 8 extra hours of practice each week, minimum 6 competitions in the Fall, each on a Saturday. Homecoming obligations, parades, etc. My 9-4 isn’t bad, it’s the 6AM practices and late nights.
