I coached for 2 years. Made a career change. Did not enjoy coaching that much for the amount of time I was spending either at school or breaking down film etc. Not to mention how bad the pay sucks. It takes a special person to coach for a long time.

So when football season is over, do you guys coach clinics, give private lessons, play side gigs, etc?

Thats also a part of choosing extra hours to make extra money

We have several coaches in the family at many levels and positions. They all have families, and make it work. Almost all of them have spouses that teach

Coaching sucks. I did it for 8 years and loved the kids I coached and taught, but you’re having the same realization I had many years ago…are those kids worth YOUR kids or your life? I wanted to travel, to have down time, to be laid back. I quit and never looked back

I feel like for the past 5-7 years, I have missed out on life. I genuinely think it all boils down to my job. I’m tired of the 65-70 hour weeks in the fall. I’m tired of working 2-3 Saturdays a month in the fall. It eases up a bit in the Spring, but before I know it, summer is here and camps for athletics and extracurricular are starting

I understand how you feel. I'm six months into a new job and I've come to learn that the expectations are just not sustainable long term for where I'm at in my life. Put your family and your well being first. You can always find another job.

Not having to cross out 10 Friday nights, 6 Saturdays. I want that time with my wife, whether it’s a weekend getaway or being productive around the house, or sprucing up the backyard and enjoying it.
There's 52 weeks in the year. What are you doing the other 42 Fridays? What's about the other 46 saturdays?

Sounds like you picked a career that you enjoy, but have to work 60-70 hours a week to make the kinda money you want instead of picking a career that you’re simply ok with but gives you the money you want working 40 hrs/wk.

Pretty common with coaches.

Main thing is giving up the coaching. That will free up your time. Just teach, and slow down a bit. Can always go back into coaching later

He’s a HS football coach. Depending on the size of the school and the emphasis on football, 40 hours could cover JUST the football part, not the additional 40 as a teacher.

That’s my point. If coaching takes 40 hours a week, then that should be your only job. Working 60-70 hours a week is doing it wrong.

Similarly when people claim they have a $100,000 a year job but they work 80 hours a week I LOL at them. They actually have two $50,000 a year jobs but aren’t smart enough to realize it.

Again, working 60-70 hours a week (especially for someone else) is doing it wrong.

You won't hit every target in life, man- and it's nothing to be upset about. No one does- even those who portray themselves as the happiest people on earth. Everyone has nagging issues in life, and that's a fact.

Responsibilities come first. After that, focus on the things in life that make you and your family happy. Life isn't meant to be easy- but it's usually what you make of it. Best of luck to you and yours.

IF you do not want to go to work every morning, find a new new job. I loved my job up till the day they told me take your bat and go home

You’re not wrong. For certain teachers, coaching is a requirement. Granted, if you teach gym, you should expect to coach a major sport.

We go into a different season, but there’s still UIL events in the Spring. The schedule is much less intensive. I have taught lessons on the side, but I find umpiring little league baseball to be a much more relaxing way to make some side cash.

seems obvious that you should find a new job. not like you can afford a kid on a teacher's salary anyway

I now will be working at a middle school. No more 6AM mornings. Hardly any late Friday nights. I have my October Saturdays back. Taking a slight paycut will be a blessing when I compare it to the time I get back.

A HUGE weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.
