None of this is remotely funny. Guys trying to cover their own asses leads to another's death. fricking horrible. And worse, it's horrifying. I would say most of us have been so intoxicated as to not remember anything. Some so intoxicated as to be unable to move. That could have been you. That could have been your friend, or son or brother.
But for the grace of God.

Those texts plus the videos showing people just stepping over the kid and not helping are what breaks my heart thinking about his parents when they read those texts and watch those videos. I can't even imagine having to see evidence of just how little my kid's life meant to those who were supposed to be his friends
Yep. That is going to haunt those parents for the rest of their lives. So sad.
Also, what the frick kind of dumbasses put camera's all around their house and then forget that they are there and do dumb/illegal shite in front of them.
Pretty sure that's what happened to Sigma Chi at LSU recently, there own security cameras picked some of them up doing coke and they got the boot.
I'm not trying to sound cold or anything, but what possessed someone to write a text saying "hey, just tell whoever that we just randomly found him and immediately called 911"? Like dude there's cameras all in your house that showed that was very far from the truth. Did you just forget that part?
I guess it's true that criminals are usually dumb.

Sorry you didn't get one either, douche.

I am jealous I did not voluntarily put things up my butt hole to make friends. I truly envy you.

These bystander incidents are not exclusive or even any more prevalent in the millennial's. Go look up the Kitty Genovese story. Although the number of witnesses was exaggerated there were still several people aware of what was going on. Additionally, there have been many studies of the bystander effect.
The Kitty Genovese case is a chilling example where people kicked the can and assumed someone else would call the cops. There was also the little girl that got hit by a car in China and left in the street a few years back. There are all sorts of examples of eyewitnesses not coming forward because they're "scared" or "don't want to get involved", too.
However, the difference with this frat is that this was 12 hours of negligence, not just a few minutes, and several people were in contact with him. At least one person recognized he was in bad shape early on. Others had to have thought the same at some point, at least before 911 was actually called.

To be fair, fraternities get unfairly painted with a broad brush based on isolated horror stories from around the country.
Most fraternities would be appalled at the kind of shite that gets uncovered at some fraternities.
From my own experience, I can tell you that my fraternity never once came even close to forcing us to do that homo-erotic shite that people read about (elephant walks, forced nudity, sodomy, etc). And my fraternity was known for having one of the toughest pledgeships on campus.

That's why I suggested reading The Lucifer Effect. It really delves into how this kind of stuff happens. Much more detailed than simply talking about the Bystander Effect.
Here's a sample...

He also notes that we as humans wish to believe in unchanging goodness of people and our power to resist situational and external pressures and temptations. In chapter 12, "Investigating Social Dynamics: Power, Conformity, and Obedience," Zimbardo discusses that peer pressure, the desire to be 'cool,' the fear of rejection, and simply being a part of a group are the focal points to acting preposterous to your character.

WTF is that supposed to mean?
"Oh no! They made you drive them home from the bars?!!! What monsters!!! I can't believe they would do something so depraved!"
Get over your childish generalizations of a wide swath of people, and learn to be a little more nuanced in your approach.

I've never met anyone who was in a frat who isn't a complete loser douche
Frats are nothing more than organized crime units at college campus that promote and celebrate and cheerlead irresponsbile behaviors like binge drinking, drug use and rape
I would never hire anyone who was in a frat because it would show they are Ok with poor choices and

With that mindset, I'm sure it has nothing to do with confirmation bias.
After all, I don't think I've ever met anyone who has introduced themselves by saying "Nice to meet you. I'm John, and I was in a fraternity in college."

There may be a sociopath or two in that group, but I think most of these guys were just weak-willed, scared men. There was a decision to make and they made the convenient one instead of the correct one.

So, you've met, what? One?

Not even close. Brotherhood, leadership, duty, philanthropy? Sure.

So you wouldn't hire some of the most qualified people in the job pool? Fraternity members by and large have a higher GPA and engage in more extracurricular activities than the student body at large. Enjoy floundering as a business owner.

Didn't you take out some exorbitant student loan at an astronomically high interest rate?
You are probably one of the last people who can judge people for poor choices.

BTW I read through the Final Charges and Presentment document linked on the last page and it's even more sick and disturbing than the timeline in the OP.
Like I literally felt sick reading some of that shite knowing that a human being had to go through that before ultimately dying. Also, some of those sick fricks were VERY concerned about what might happen to them/the chapter and didn't seem to care to much that one of their "friends" just fricking died in their house.
