Time: Social media hurts girls more than boys

Cyberbullying mysteriously disappears when you get off social media I heard...
Well, what made you think I would stop using social media altogether? That's unfathomable.
quote:
A new study published in the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health suggests the issue is even more nuanced. Social media is associated with mental health issues, the research says—but only under certain circumstances, and only for certain people. In girls, frequent social-media use seemed to harm health when it led to either cyberbullying and/or inadequate sleep and exercise. But these factors did not seem to have the same effect on boys, and the study didn’t pick up on specific ways that social networks could be harming them.
quote:
In 2013, only about 43% of the teens in the study said they regularly checked social media multiple times per day. That rose to 59% in year two, and 68.5% in year three. Over time, frequent social-media use was associated with decreased mental health and well-being, as measured by responses to questions about psychological distress, life satisfaction, happiness and anxiety. Social media seemed to have a stronger impact on girls, but the relationship was present for boys as well.
quote:
In boys, however, these factors only explained 12% of the relationship between social media and poor mental health. There are a few reasons that may be true. For one thing, girls tend to be more susceptible than boys to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety regardless of screen time. Girls also experience more cyberbullying than boys, and Nicholls says they may be uniquely bothered by certain aspects of it, including comments about appearance and negative comparisons with others.
quote:
Takeaways for parents of teens are similar, she says. They should encourage teenagers to stay active and turn off their phones at night—and perhaps more importantly, they should specifically ask about cyberbullying, since that seems to be a primary source of harm, Nicholls says.

It's time for some common sense social media legislation.
For our children's future.

We sure this wasn’t from the scientific journal Duh?
Didn’t need to study adolescents to figure this one out. Social media already drives grown women fricking nuts.

Regular bullying stops if you never leave the house.
Neither are reasonable expectations.

Well, it's the Lancet so pretty close.

I feel like we've had this study several times now.

As the great Louis CK said about women and their mental warfare.
A man will frick you up, women are fricked up. They will ruin your life.

How is this equivalent to not being on social media?
Leaving the house is absolutely essential to maintain the most basic human needs.
Social media isnt necessary for any human needs.

Neither are reasonable expectations.
It's not reasonable to ask your children to stay off social media?

12-13 year old girls don’t need Instagram . No reason for that and only does them mental harm overalll

I'm being hyperbolic about not leaving the house, but more realistic would be bullying st school. Changing schools or being home schooled should not be the first line of defense. Addressing the bullying itself should be the focus.

It's not reasonable for a parent with a child being cyberbullied to default to telling their child to simply get off social media. As a last ditch effort? Sure, same with changing schools or being home schooled, but it's not a reasonable default.

If I post a picture, it might be my daughter, might be my dog, maybe a fishing pole with a beer next to it.
A lot of women post their arse, tits, arse, tits, arse, and tits. Rinse repeat.

this is 100% correct
social media is simply the tool
focus on the drivers, not the tools if you want things to get better

Cyberbullying is not equivalent to bullying at school. You dont need social media, you need to be at school and have few physical alternatives.

What makes it "not a reasonable default"? Its perfectly reasonable.
It's my child.
The child is a minor.
I pay for the child's phone.
I will guide the child to be raised in the way I think is correct until that child comes of age.
All of the above is true making it reasonable to ask a minor child to refrain from using social media, especially your own child. This isnt debatable.

I think we should treat girls the same way we treat boys online. They’re equals after all, right?
Posted on 8/14/19 at 8:55 am to tiggerthetooth
the problem is that you are simply putting a flimsy bandaid on the actual problem by simply taking away social media

Not sure Nicholls has a teenager or teenagers but my experience with encouraging a teenager to do ANYTHING or change ANY behavior is an exercise in futility. Also, when was the last time your teenager was amenable to opening up when specifically asked about ANYTHING?
We are at the same point we were at in the early 80s when personal music devices (Walkman etc.) debuted. I remember parents freaking out about how much we were wearing our head phones and how disengaged we were becoming. I also remember studies on everything from imminent hearing loss to creating loners. Same concerns different tech.

It's usually worse online because it doesn't end. It's also usually an extension of in person bullying.

You're missing the point. If you don't want your child on social media in general, sure, go that route. The presumption is that you're already okay with your child being on social media without bullying. Asking your child to get off because they're being bullied is not the first step in that case.
