I imagine St. Cletus will be the beneficiary here of some additional students.

Jefferson Parish magnet schools and improving NOLA charter schools claim another casualty.

That was 14 years ago. Why did it take them so long to close?

Are Catholic children migrating to non-Catholic education options or are there fewer Catholics in the area?

Those 4 schools will also benefit.

Couldn’t have anything to do with everyone 25-35 moving to the north shore now would it?

There was a dude at work who tried to blame being late on having to evacuate for katrina. People love to bring it up.

Probably both.

Business seems to be down across the board in the Catholic church.

In the inner cities I don't think its that bad, but in rural areas you see more communities shutting down and merging churches which is why the church had to go to the money that was supposed to be used to help the needy and use it to patch holes in their budget (so technically it helped the needy).

But I imagine there are some areas in which there are now public schools that provide a better opportunity than Catholic schools.

Where I live... In Plaquemine, when the public school system built a math and science academy, there were kids who were going to Catholic school who then started going there.

Partially, but that is so 15-20 years ago.
Nola is just doing better than they had been at the school thing. Jefferson Parish too. Some Catholic schools are still doing well, but the number that are having a hard time is growing.

I don't know how Shaw hasn't shut down yet.

My daughter was in Catholic school and quite a few students who started there with her in pre-K left. What started out as around 60 kids in the same grade during pre-K was down to around 45 by the time the same group of kids were in 5th grade. Some moved out of the area but a lot of the ones who left ended up testing in to one of the Jefferson Parish magnet schools. Having better public school options if your kid can test in and the continually rising tuition costs for Catholic schools is going to keep causing more Catholic schools to have to close/merge

Probably due to the rapid increase in quality of public schools.

Catholic schools (esp elementary) enrollment is dropping all over. There’s half than a handful that are keeping steady numbers and can really say they’ll be around for the next 20 + years.

Compare the numbers from the 90’s to today. Freaking huge.

1. People aren’t having 2+ kids like the previous generation.

2. Waves of people moving out of city limits or parish for good public schools.

3. In EBR, there’s more magnet programs today vs. 15 years ago.

4. Oh, and there’s the Catholic Church BS/corruption that driving ALOT of young catholic families away from the church all together.

Nobody is shocked the west bank families don’t value education for their children so the enrollment is down
