This phrase was coined by the Swedish-American activist, Joe Hill in 1911 when criticizing the Salvation Army’s philosophy especially their concentration on saving the souls of the hungry rather than feeding them. He used it in one of his songs while leading a radical labour organization.

The phrase is originally from the song “The Preacher and the Slave” (1911) by Swedish-American labor activist and songwriter Joe Hill (1879–1915), which he wrote as a parody of the Salvation Army hymn “In the Sweet By-and-By” (published 1868). The song criticizes the Salvation Army for focusing on people’s salvation rather than on their material needs:[1]

You will eat, bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You’ll get pie in the sky when you die.

Great post! I had never heard that.

Joe didn’t know that man does not live by bread alone.

Also didn't know that the Salvation Army feeds people and the Communist Party starves them.

Joe Hill was a lazy piece of shite communist. What's a shame is you can't frame lazy piece of shite communists for murder then blast em to hell by a firing squad like back in the good old days.

I didn’t know that was their original intent. I always assumed salvation part of the name was because they salvage all of our unwanted items

Sort of interesting trivia, but the Salvation Army was the only effective and helpful organization doing anything of value after Hurricane Katrina when the need was beyond reasonable and other groups were too busy squabbling and whining to do anything. I saw them under Causeway and I-10 in Metairie as they were giving food and water, coordinating emergency medical care, organizing transport under awful conditions and all with a great heart.
Far from pie in the sky, they were seriously helping.
That was effective Christian love in action.
They earned my undying respect during those days.

Joe Hill was A Wobblie (iWW) and was dead before the Bolshevik revolution.
IWW disassociated itself from the Communists.
