The fact that he received one DUI then a little over a year later he was on the water under the influence, putting people in harms way... And will only serve 2 years in prison is criminal within itself.
This is a slap in the face to the families who lost a loved one.

Only 2 years for killing TWO PEOPLE is insane

Well, if he acts like we all suspect he will once released, the suspended part of the sentence will be reinstated.

These DAs and judges are such garbage. If people knew how many thousands skate in criminal court each year they'd be grabbing pitchforks.

How often do you guys think street justice is meted out in cases like this? I figured I’d hear about them all the time on the news the way this board talks about it.

Probably only a year and 8 months in reality too.

Basically never

It’s a volume problem as much as anything, from my observation.
There aren’t enough judges or trial dates and there aren’t enough ADA’s or public defenders most places. So anything outside of murders and child rapes get kicked down the road until they are pleaded out for menial sentences.
Anything like this particular crime is on the back burner, unfortunately. I can’t even imagine how lesser felonies like assaults, property crimes, and drugs are handled.
In part, I blame civil litigation especially here in Louisiana where everyone sues everyone over everything all the time. It eats up way too much of the dockets in smaller parishes, and way too many of the judges in the larger parishes.

If I had to bury my child in that circumstance, ol baw would have to live all of his days looking over his shoulder when he got out. One of those days he'd get caught slipping.

Do you know how much arse whip can be bought with $100 commissary?

You have to bump that number up if I'm looking at time in the SHU.

There is also another victim that was injured and has lost her leg. Just a total tragedy. Terrible.

Tragedies like this happen every day. And everyone says they’d do the same thing you’re saying. But it never actually happens.
But if it makes you guys feel better to say it to strangers on the internet I guess that’s okay with me.

Law enforcement struggles to solve 50% of homicides in this country, so you sure that never happens?

That it never happens? Nah. But I’m sure that it happens so rarely that the numbers aren’t even really worth bringing up.

Why didn’t they charge him with vehicular homicide, which carries five to thirty?
The article said he plead no contest so the lesser charge and sentence was due to the plea bargain agreement with the DA.
quote:
Chaisson pleaded no contest to reduced charges on July 7, including two counts of negligent homicide and five counts of negligent injuring.

Why only post 2 years when he got 4.5 years? You should join the media.

Victim impact statements are something that should not be allowed in the courtroom. Nothing can be done about the incident. It is just venting and if the convicted isn't remorseful by then, nothing said will change that.

They may not get killed but they absolutely have a hard time in prison. Constantly getting taken advantage of. All commissary is taken from them if they get any, beat up, constantly treated like shite. This is very common if in gen pop

How would you even know this?
