Someone my father in law knows was awoken at like 2 am by someone ringing the doorbell. He grabs his gun and goes to the door and there's a guy saying he ran out of gas. He somehow saw another guy with a gun so he flung the door open and started blasting the two guys. The one with the gun dies and the other ran to his car. The homeowner put a few bullets in him while he was trying to get away. He also died.
The homeowner had to go to court for manslaughter I believe because the two guys never entered the home and was trying to flee. The homeowner ended up winning but had to pay a shite ton in lawyer fees
