…The group then chased after the dog and later found that it had fallen into the uncovered cistern.

Cook said it then seems that one of the hunters jumped into the cistern, which was even with the ground. The man was then trapped in the cistern, where the water level was about eight feet below the ground, according to Cook. The BCSO later learned that the water contained hydrogen sulfite gas.

Two other people from the hunting party, a man and a woman, then also jumped in the cistern, "possibly to rescue the first person," according to the BCSO. The fourth member of the party went to his truck to summon assistance and call 911.

"Because of the gas in the hole, we think – and we're speculating here, we'll let the autopsy bear this out. But we're speculating that the gas overcame them and they were not able to maintain any kind of buoyancy on top of the water, and therefore, they sank underneath the water," Cook said.

Daman, that will do it.

Hydrogen sulfide...but who's counting.

I had heard there may have been dangerous levels of methane in the hole.

So they must have died because of exhaustion from treading water and eventually drowning?

Maybe, but it could have been bad air. If the O2 level was too low they could have suffocated pretty quickly.

Sounds like they were overcome by H2S poisoning.

Makes sense.

Just a horrible situation all around.

What were they hunting in August in Texas when it's 100+ degrees?

Why drive from Florida to Texas to hunt hogs? There's plenty of hogs in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana. Places where people will openly invite you to come shoot them. They drove past all those million hogs to get to this one TX cornfield.... apparently.

Chances that the guys were ready to shoot the dog, but the girl talked them into jumping in?

They aren't using buoyancy to slide it through a tuna door.

They probably sent down a rookie with some rope, like the deceased should have done for the first person that went in.

Not gonna lie. If my dog fell in that cistern I’d probably be dead too. No way I could stand there hearing my boy barking and just say “oh well”. And not knowing H2S is waiting would be the end.
