I'd like to believe that over the course of however many millions of years they've been around, that they've developed at least a tiny bit more than "see food eat food".

Humans would have had their cell phones out and watched the dog drown.

There absolutely is. I know Dogs have a soul I can see emotion on their face. I know a girl with a pet raccoon and that thing is protective as hell over her.
I fully believe animals have feelings to an extent. I think humans without civilization would be similar. 90% instinct but there would be instances of emotion and feelings when core survival isn’t the driving factor

Even those crocs know dogs are f'ing awesome!

They could have been pushing it closer to the bank in hopes of attracting the entire pack that was chasing it, so they could feed on all of the dogs. Just a guess, but it's possible...

The crocs mistaked it for a smaller croc.

I agree with Neal. Luring dogs into the water to try swim after their prey, then eat them.

Just so everyone is on the same page, crocs do NOT have empathy. From Niles to Salties, South American to Indian… none of them have empathy.

This is an amazing watch. Obviously the bullet to the head likely had something to do with it, but Poncho wasn’t really down to interact with other humans as much as that guy, so there was recognition of an individual that helped him. Still what that guy did with that croc in the water is unbelievable. I would have never trusted one that far no matter how well fed I kept him.

I’ve always thought animals souls. Dogs get jealous of another dog getting your attention. You don’t get jealous like that unless you possess love. Animals dream, show happiness by smiling, bring peoples phones back after they drop in the ocean, protect children, I could go on and on. I know I’ll see my dog Lucy when I pass.

The crocs have no "emotional empathy" or "emotional intelligence" which is a made up term to begin with. The likely explanation is the crocodiles just gorged and didn't see the dog as a threat.

Some animals, pms the only mammals, have feelings and limited thoughts. But overall, animals are really dumb. Reptiles have nothing going on in their heads.

How do you know?
I read an interesting study in National Geographic. Rats will try and assist other rats when in trouble, if they can’t help the other rat, will actually get depressed. There’s a certain fly, they’ve been studying for decades, if it sees another dead fly it will get depressed. I don’t know how they figure that but I’ll “trust” the scientists on it. There’s a pretty cool link shared in this thread about a crocodile who was wild and became a pet to a man, lets him swim with it. Man saved its life, no other person can come around but that man. There’s something going on in its head, or was, it got sick and died

Owned pet lizards, snakes, and turtles. They’re about on the level of fish. They react to what they see in front of them and that’s about it.

But why didn't the crocodiles use this as an opportunity to eat the dog,
This is an easy one to answer. The crocs were already stuffed full with some of the thousands of other stray dogs lining the streets, ditches, cities, roadways, and other water areas in India.
