Three crocodiles guide stray dog to safety from a pack of feral dogs, scientists baffled

When a young dog in India sought refuge in a river while being chased by a pack of feral animals, it was immediately surrounded by three crocodiles. They were so close they could "have easily devoured" it, experts say, but when their snouts came in contact, they helped save its life instead.
quote:
"These crocodiles were actually touching the dog with their snout and nudging it to move further for a safe ascent on the bank and eventually escape," researchers wrote. "...Given that the mugger was well within the striking range and could have easily devoured the dog, yet none of them attacked and instead chose to nudge it towards the bank, implies that the hunger drive was absent."
quote:
But why didn't the crocodiles use this as an opportunity to eat the dog, like they have in other instances? Even the scientists are unsure. Their best guess, however, is that the muggers were simply putting their emotional intelligence on display. "Emotional empathy" – which allows one species "to experience the emotional feelings of another" – isn't thoroughly investigated in these animals, they said, but it could be an answer.

They probably just got done splitting a water buffalo.

Well, maybe they felt like a curry and not a Korean takeout.

There are more to animals than we know. I’m not saying they have a conscious or a soul, but I am open to discussing if there is more to them than just pure instinct.

This sounds like something Les Miles would say. Is he a researcher now?

Maybe they wanted to see it get killed by the feral animals. 50/50 chance..they pushed it back into the danger zone.

I though you were joking.
I half expected to click the link and seeing three crocs just eating a dog.

I agree 100%

Crocs are hoping someone takes the dog in and feeds it well so they can eat it in a few months.

Crocodiles have a brain a little larger than a walnut and are basically dinosaurs. They cannot experience empathy.

Crocs don’t give a frick about your feelings.

So, when I put bait right in front of a bass, the bass doesn't strike due to the feels?

Yep, just out of spite.

Maybe they have toothbrushes and are therefore not as ornery.

To the two fricksticks that downvoted my post, you are some gullible motherfrickers.
You really fricking think crocodiles have empathy?
