Thoughts on getting the most charity out of $1,000?

Let's say you wanted to take $1,000 and provide as much charity as possible with it that you can. You could just give all $1,000 to a needy family, or maybe cut it in half between two families, but that is still limiting the amount of people you can affect with this $1,000.

Obviously you could just turn it into 20's and ride around and hand a $20 to every needy person you see. I'm not feeling that idea either. Maybe buy as many jackets as you can and hand them out to kids at bus stops that are freezing? Probably a good way to get put on a sheriff's office watch list.

Maybe rent a big passenger van for a few days and pick up people sitting endlessly at bus stops and bring them where they need to go?

Can even be more than $1,000, just starting to kick around some thoughts. What ideas do you guys have?

And no, this isn't court ordered or for a tax write off. I want to throw something good into a world that fricking sucks, even if it's the equivalent of pouring a water bottle into the ocean.

Or take it to Harrah's, all on black, double your money. PROFIT!

Give it all to the government, they know how to handle my money and charity better than I do.

Why not donate it to breast cancer awareness? You’re not a sexist are you?

For real though, I'd probably either give it to St. Jude or pay off cafeteria bills for poor kids in schools.

How would someone go about doing this? Have you done it?

A lot of companies will match charitable donations up to a certain amount. FYI. Check with your employer.

I’d prob try to find a local non profit charity related to something you believe in. Local charities seem to struggle for support more than the big brand national ones and are typically run by good hearted people.

There are a lot of people in need, but you can help by helping out one at a time. I think its better to give to one needy family which could help them get ahead to some degree than to break it up and give it to multiple families, which would be more short term..

Donate it to a hard working exotic dancer paying her way through nursing school.

No I haven't done it, but I've read about people doing it and heard of a colleague raising money to do it for he kids at his child's school last Christmas.

I think you just call up the school and say you want to square the bill, or if you just have $1,000 say you'd like it applied evenly to all the open tabs that are delinquent.

I’d give it to another charity with a good “actual dollars spent on charity” track record and preferably a CEO who isn’t making $500k/year. There are websites that track stuff like this if anyone is actually interested in giving to responsibile charities

Salvation Army. They did wonders for a family member I had in need. They aren't just a used things store like so many people think. But if it were me I'd send it the local one or call them and ask specifically what do y'all need other than volunteers if you want to drop off something instead of just cash.

Good on your for wanting to do something.

give half to St Jude

give a C note to your local humane society

give another C to the Salvation Army

then do some research and find out about some local charities in your town. as someone said they don't get the big national publicity and so have a harder time raising money.

In my experience, the best charities are those that you donate time to. Find a few place that you are willing to volunteer at for a while and then give the money to the place or places that you felt were the most impactful during your experience
