I train at a Gracie United gym and I highly recommend the GU gym there, run by brown belt Robbie Gautreaux. Oh, and Bernardo Faria will be there doing a seminar on 4/28. He is extremely skilled.

Yes but it's boring to watch

If you want your child to be well rounded as a fighter or to defend himself, you have a couple of options. If I had to do it all over again I would train Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling and BJJ.

Why not just get your concealed carry?

I would have to strongly disagree. I've found karate and taeqwando to be inaffective in the the real world. From a person that has used jiu jitsu in real world applications, it works. My two daughters take it as well and I feel very confident that if a boy every tried something later in life, they will regulate.

Unless taekwondo has changed or has a legit instructor running a dojo, taekwondo isn't the best form of self defense.

I think Krav Maga is the best for self defense. It's not overly technical and has addresses strikes and grappling.
Lately I've been doing kickboxing and I love it. As far as self defense, certainly get good at punching and kicking. I do it for the exercise though. It's exhausting.
When my son gets a little older he'll do Krav or kick boxing. Certainly not wasting time with karate like I did.

I wasn't really being serious with the taekwondo suggestion. Looks utterly useless in a fight without years and years of practice.

Old school boxing FTW. Invariably it's the former golden gloves boxer who wins the youtube fight against the unsuspecting street thug, and he doesn't have to get his clothes dirty.
As far as real self defense goes, if you are far enough away from an attacker to be able to land a punch, then you are far enough to RUN AWAY. Which is, of course, the best real defense.
But what do you do when someone grabs a hold of you? Thats where BJJ gets the nod as the best for real world self defense.
Same goes for my son. If someone bullies him he's far more likely to submit the shite out of him, than land a series of complex punches in a playground brawl. Get the bully in a reverse choke and I bet he leaves you alone. Just sayin

I guess so. But punching a bully a few times works too. I'd think boxing would be great for self defense and for exercise.

Until his friends start kicking your son in the head while he's choking the bully. That's where all these self-defense techniques come up short-nobody fights one on one anymore. And enough assailants can overwhelm Chuck Norris himself.

Kids still voluntarily take martial arts?
Posted on 4/5/17 at 6:59 pm to Jim Rockford
That's why the son needs to conceal carry

I had no idea. He was the best.
TRUE STORY ALERT
I was an assistant instructor to him at LSU for beginner's. End of class first day and Yoon asks for any questions. Some jacked up freshman immediately throws his hand in the air and says "When will you show us how to defend against a knife attack?"
Yoon says: "Oh! Heel and toe defense!"
Kid says: "Whats that?"
Mr. Yoon says: "You put heel, then toe on ground one after other very fast in opposite direction!"

Sampled a couple of Gracie United classes in Biloxi. The organization's ok. After training under a Pedro Sauer affiliate, though, I don't see how people advance well in other BJJ systems.

well to be honest there aren't many people better than Pedro
or a good gracie barra affiliate
