I want to start training BJJ. I saw there are a few joints around town. I'm also interested in enrolling my 5 year old son in a kids class.

Any feedback on the gyms in the area? Any feedback on the childrens programs?

Sorry if should be MSB

I just learned from my roommate back in college. He was also 280 and could bench a house. I got my arse kicked a lot when training.

Gracie United which is respected from BR to Alabama. I have never trained in the one in BR though. Also check out Bayou JJ (this was recommended to me by someone I have rolled with in AL and FL). Usually any "big" gym will have a pretty good established kids program who travel and compete.

That's because a lot of it involves controlling your opponent and getting them to tire themselves out.

Nick long at glory martial arts, is a brown belt and also teaches judo

I know he teaches kids. If there is a short stocky guy there named Camille, he's legit in Judo. He was on the Cuban national team for almost a decade. I did randori (Japanese for sparring) once, I never felt so helpless before and he wasn't going too hard.

There's actually a decent amount of places in br that teach it now.

It wasn't like this 10-15 years ago

Take advantage of it

I trained at Gracie United when I was living in BR. Great gym, I highly recommend it.

It looks effective. Honestly when I look on YouTube it seems those with Jiu Jitsu training are the ones who win fights. It just looks boring to me, though.

It can be boring to watch. Strikes are entertaining. Grappling is boring.

You should do taekwondo instead. It's better for real world application. No one in a bar can defend a chop to the neck.

A 5 yr. old wants to swing some nunchucks, not roll on the ground and hug people. Put the kid in real karate.

Old school boxing FTW. Invariably it's the former golden gloves boxer who wins the youtube fight against the unsuspecting street thug, and he doesn't have to get his clothes dirty.

Not exactly

Unless taekwondo has changed or has a legit instructor running a dojo, taekwondo isn't the best form of self defense.

It does teach a child coordination, respect, exercise, social interaction, and a little practical self defense. Too many Mcdojo's. Too many flashy kicks that take too much time to execute, I'd never axe kick anyone in the real world, but I'd do a roundhouse to the liver instead
