My dad killed himself in 2001. He was the funniest, most likable guy in the room, and that is no an exaggeration. He got along with everyone, and could make anyone laugh. He was in all sorts of clubs/activities (Spear Fishing, Coaching little league, etc).

There were no less than 300-400 people at his funeral. I did not realize it then, because I was young and in shock, but it helps me a little knowing that many people cared about him.

Side note, you never know what type of demons someone has.

If this person had come to you with their problems, would you have listened?

People who are suicidal already feel a great deal of isolation. Hearing people persistently say "it's selfish" just makes matters worse.

All the Catholic funerals I've been to have been Funeral Masses.

That pretty much sums it up. I don't want a funeral. I don't find them helpful in the least. My grandfather didn't have one and it was such a huge relief for me.

My dad requested when the day comes that he dies that we not do a big funeral. Basically said get the family together, buy a 200 dollar pine box, and dig a hole.

Which makes sense. I don’t get why people spend so much on funerals.

Catholic teaching no longer states that people who commit suicide go to hell. For whatever that is worth

And my family is huge so it’s just people sitting a talking (laughing even) about completely unrelated shite. Almost feels inappropriate.

This scene from Sopranos captures it well

If they are cremated much of the costs can be avoided, if not other than the cost of the casket much of it is dictated by state and local laws. 15 years ago I was responsible for burying a relative for the least amount of money possible. Embalming by a funeral home was around $2500.00, basic cemetery plot with no concrete vault $1200.00, and the cheapest casket was $900.00, that plus a few extras like some flowers and a few bucks to a minister and it was $7000.00

Even if you go tbe cremation route, tve body has to be embalmed if there is any kind of viewing. The whole funeral services industry is a fricking racket.

How does a family decide to have a big wake or a small wake, etc?
Isn't it a factor of just how many people show up?

I am still mad at local funeral parlor that took advantage. You have elder people - often - and they are thinking a million things besides saving money on burial costs. And the person selling them all this extra stuff is a reassuring presence, but it was not ethical in my experience.

You think someone thinking rational would kill themselves especially if they have family they are leaving behind?

No. Something beyond their control is going on and whatever he was dealing with, he might have justified to himself that his family would be better off without him. In his state of mind, he could have seriously thought he was doing the right thing.

You can't say someone is selfish because like I said, when someone does it, they are usually not thinking rational.

Your insight and compassion on this topic is so evident. Thank you for sharing a perspective that few of us will ever have, fortunately.
