I am planning a trip for my wife and I to go to the Georgia, LSU game in death valley and will be flying into NOLA.

where would be a better place to stay for tourists, the french quarter or down town? we are looking for things to do in walking distance, restaurants, bars etc.

Stay near Canal street. I personally like the Hilton Riverside near the foot of Canal. It's right behind Harrah's casino and easy walking distance to the Quarter and Warehouse district where a lot of good restaurants are.

Is getting assaulted and robbed something you enjoy?

unless you have armed guards with you at all times stay off the streets after dark or carry enough cash so they are happy enough after robbing you that they wont kill you and rape your wife

I would stay in the quarter...that is the very that is the very reason to go to new orleans. Tell us what you like and we'll come up with suggestions for lodging, dining, etc.

I really Like staying here or the Doubletree on Canal. I like Hilton Brands. I also like the Homewood on Poydras.

Hampton Inn on Carondolet is nice with a two block walk to Bourbon St...

Riverfront Hilton gives you easy access to the Warehouse District...

also depends on how long you're coming down and what you want to see in NOLA

We stay at the Doubletree across from Harrah's when we don't want to spend too much. It's 75 yds from the front door if that's your thing.

If you don't mind spending a little more than you can't go wrong with The Roosevelt or Hotel Monteleone. There are many other good options to choose from.
