The reddit poster is correct from a street smarts POV.

With that said, it's an indictment of the community if a nonviolent person has to be on guard 24/7 and dodge action. I do not think it's fair to blame the woman in any way.

I agree with this assessment. She steps up when he punches at the other people. Then when the crazy dude steps towards her, she turns her back to him. Rookie mistake on a NYC subway platform.
