Depends on the size of the sport and athlete.
If you think Michael Phelps was competing for anything other than personal glory or to be the GOAT, you're delusional. And that's not necessarily wrong.
But these women hammer throwers who make no money and no one knows their name, I'm sure have more of a connection to their county. Depends on the sport as well as.
