You can’t be a patriot if you don’t understand freedom.

Patriot in your sense is just a code word for something else

I didn't really approve of the way Kaep conveyed his message, but at least he had a message.

He also wasn't representing his country, he was a professional athlete playing for the 49ers.

The Olympics only exist as a vehicle for representing one's country. One can choose to put their country's colors on while actively hating it, but there's going to be a lot lost in that message. (This was one of the biggest problems with the USWNT, IMO.)

I can't imagine choosing to represent something just so I can be a petulant dickhead about it on a grand stage. That wouldn't make sense in any other aspect of life, and it doesn't make sense here.

Lester, we're still waiting for you to explain to the OT what the stars and stripes represents? And try to dig a little deeper than the literal country it represents. tell us.

She has the freedom to compete as an independent against her country. If she were to win, in that case, she could lift whatever flag and have played any song of her choosing. She should not, however, be trying to get a slot on the American team if she hates America and it’s symbols. Why would she want to make herself an agent and symbol of something she hates?

Either I completely misunderstood your post, or I agree with you for the first ever.

I think you read me loud and clear on this one

If your anti-American convictions are so feeble that you'll still put on the colors, compete, and take the paycheck, then you don't really have convictions at all.

Bob, I don’t think you understand freedom either: Religious, political, expression, beliefs.

Does not get you thrown out of the United States of America.

She willfully tried out for the US Olympic team.

All the regressive democrats pulling their typical deflections and obfuscations to try and justify the unjustifiable.

Nobody forced her to be on the US team. She intentionally tried out to be on the US team. If she doesn't like the US she shouldn't have tried out for the damn US team.

I don't expect the pea brains to understand though. All they see is someone shitting on this great country so they will twist in to pretzels to defend it.

so, let me get this straight.

she's using her freedom of expression and belief to protest her perceived lack of freedom of expression and belief.

brilliant Lester, brilliant.

It is one thing to criticize your government or your leaders. It is another to show disdain for the country itself. She has the right to do so, but she should not be afforded the privilege of doing so while representing the United States at the olympics.

The Olympics has pretty lax rules around what country athletes can represent. If there’s a country she hates less than America, it likely wouldn’t be difficult to get permission to compete with them, assuming she’s talented enough to make the team. Plus, she can always compete as an independent, assuming she is good enough to attract sponsors that will foot the bill to get her to Tokyo.

If she wants to effectively be sponsored by the U.S. she probably shouldn’t rant about how much she hates the product. I once got banned by TD for criticizing a sponsor of this website. They don’t pay chicken for negative press. If she wants America’s money, she should probably have a desire to promote America’s symbols and values.
